The animated film Agami will open in Korean theaters on September 9, distributor At9film announced on the 10th. The release brings to screen a story that has waited six years since Gu Byeong-mo's source novel appeared in 2018, a gap that reflects how long the pipeline from literary adaptation to finished animation can run in Korea's independent sector.

The film centers on a child named Gon who, after being thrown into deep water one day, finds himself with gills. Director Ahn Jae-hoon, who previously made the animated shorts Mudang (2021) and Shower (2017), handles the adaptation. Ahn has built a small but distinct body of work drawing on Korean literary material, and Agami continues that thread on a longer canvas.

Jung Hae-in and Kang Ha-neul lead the voice cast, joined by Lee Cheong-ah, Yoo Jae-myung, and Kim Sun-young. The assembled cast carries considerable screen credibility, which in Korean animation is still a meaningful marketing signal: locally produced animated features have historically relied on literary pedigree and recognizable talent to draw adult audiences who might otherwise not consider the format.

Gu Byeong-mo, whose novels have drawn consistent critical attention in Korea, expressed gratitude that her characters had been rendered with what she described as soft colors and beautiful draftsmanship, and thanked the voice cast for bringing personality alongside sound. She said she hoped the film would offer audiences a particular experience where the fantastical and the real meet.

Agami opens September 9.
