Season 5 of New Recruit was confirmed on September 30, the day after the fourth season's finale aired on ENA, a sequencing that says something about how much confidence the production team has in the series at this point.

In Korean television, sustaining a drama past three seasons is genuinely rare. The short list of shows that have managed four or more includes Makdwaejeok Yeongaessi (17 seasons), God's Quiz (five), and Voice (four). New Recruit has now joined that company, and its creative team is already looking past it.

What the ratings actually showed

Season 4, subtitled Sabotage, opened on August 24 with a 2.8% nationwide rating (Nielsen Korea), the highest first-episode figure in the franchise's history. From there it climbed steadily: episode 10, which aired on the 22nd, hit a series-best 4.8%, and the finale landed at 5.2%, good for seventh place among all Monday-Tuesday dramas in ENA's history. On Tving, the show held the number one streaming position for three consecutive weeks, and in the first week of September it placed second in a combined TV-OTT buzz survey.

Those numbers are not incidental to the Season 5 announcement. The production company, KT Studio Genie, is making a direct bet that the audience built over four seasons will carry through the gap.

The road to Season 5

Before the main series returns, two other projects take priority. The first is New Recruit: The Movie, a spinoff film already in the can. Unlike the drama, it is set inside a military hospital rather than a regular army base, a deliberate change of setting. Director Min Jin-gi, who has helmed every season of the show, returns for the film, joined by TWICE's Jeongyeon and actor Ryu Gyeong-su in new roles.

After the film, director Min and series writer Yoon Ki-young will begin production on Sseuning Yaegukdan, a human drama about an amateur baseball team and the ordinary men who play on it. The cast includes Oh Jung-se, Jeon Hye-jin, Park Ji-hwan, and Joo Hyun-young; filming is scheduled to start toward the end of the year. Season 5 of New Recruit will follow once that project is complete. No broadcast date for the new season has been set.

The signals were visible before the finale even aired. Director Min told interviewers that the final episode contained hints about what comes after Season 4, and cast members said in their closing remarks that they expected to return for Season 5 soon.

What the creative team is thinking

Director Min and writer Yoon spoke to reporters on the 28th in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and were candid about the pressure the season structure creates. "For a seasonal format to work, the next season has to be more entertaining than the previous one, that's the baseline," Min said. "With Season 4, we were already asking how to surpass Season 3."

The answer this time was to expand the world. The first three seasons were confined to the fictional Sinhwa Unit, an army base. Season 4 introduced the Marine Corps for the first time, an addition Min described as a genuine gamble given that the existing cast already numbered around 20 characters. The positive reception, he suggested, validated the approach.

Yoon Ki-young's writing goal across the series has been what he calls "comedy that makes no one uncomfortable", broadly accessible humor that doesn't rely on a single generational register. "We try to pursue universal comedy that works for every age group, while also layering in things that different age groups find funny for their own reasons," he said. Min added that the production uses a collaborative group-writing system specifically to stress-test material against that standard.

One structural feature of the show that the team identified as both a strength and a sentimental challenge is its habit of launching near-unknown actors and watching them grow. Kim Min-ho and Nam Tae-woo were essentially newcomers when the series began; both have developed visible profiles over the run. This season, two recurring characters, Kang Chan-seok (played by Lee Jung-hyun) and Choi Byeong-nam (played by Kim Hee-su), were written out after their characters completed military service. "It felt like watching a soldier you cared about leave the unit," Yoon said. "But it also means we have to build the next Kang Chan-seok and Choi Byeong-nam."

New Recruit is based on a YouTube animated series of the same name. The drama adaptation began in 2022 and follows Park Min-seok, a new recruit whose father is a division commander, as he navigates a unit full of every kind of soldier imaginable. That premise, social privilege meeting military egalitarianism, has kept the show's comedic engine running through four seasons, and the team's position is that they still have material left to work with. "We can't even predict where New Recruit will go," Min and Yoon said together. "We still have a lot left to say."
