Woo Seoyun was named Miss Korea Jin at the 70th Miss Korea Pageant on August 22, beating out 25 other finalists at the COEX Auditorium in Gangnam, Seoul. The win immediately renewed interest in something many Korean viewers already knew: she grew up on television.

For years, Woo appeared alongside her father, former pro basketball player and broadcaster Woo Jiwon, on a string of family-oriented variety programs. That ready-made public history is now being re-examined alongside her pageant crown.

A celebrity family in the spotlight

Woo Jiwon was well known during his playing career for his looks as much as his game, and his daughter became a recurring presence on Korean variety TV from a young age. She appeared on the SBS program Star Junior Show붕어빵 in 2009, then on JTBC's Yoo Jasik Sangpaljja and tvN story's My Kid's Romance 2, among others.

The appearance generating the most discussion now is a 2019 segment on the tvN variety show Dungji Talchul 3, recorded when she was 16. In it, she introduced herself as a third-year middle school student, and her father mentioned offhandedly that she was already over 173 cm tall and hated being reminded of it. The footage shows a noticeably younger-looking Woo, rounder cheeks, a more girlish bearing, and the contrast with her current appearance has fueled speculation online about whether she has had cosmetic procedures.

The plastic surgery debate

The speculation is a familiar cycle in Korean celebrity culture: a public figure's older photos surface, differences are noted, and accusations follow quickly. Some commenters argued that cosmetic surgery should disqualify a contestant from a beauty pageant. Others pushed back, pointing out that significant weight loss alone can alter a person's facial structure enough to make before-and-after comparisons unreliable as evidence.

Woo has not addressed the comments publicly.

Who she is now

Woo Seoyun was born in 2003 and is currently studying fine arts at Tufts University in the United States, with ambitions to work as a global art curator. She had already won the Sun title at the 2026 Miss Seoul-Gyeonggi-Incheon regional pageant before advancing to the national finals, where she took the top prize, Jin (眞).

In her acceptance remarks, she said she had not prepared anything to say because she genuinely did not expect to win. She thanked her fellow contestants, her family, and everyone involved in staging the event, describing the competition as something built through the effort of many people.

The 70th edition of the pageant, organized by Global E&B, drew finalists from eight regional qualifying rounds across the country. Among the 26 women who reached the final stage were daughters of two former professional basketball players, Woo Jiwon and Jeon Heecheol, though neither of that detail nor the pageant's broader field received as much online attention as Woo Seoyun's childhood television archive.
