aespa released 'WDA' (Whole Different Animal) on May 11, the first pre-release single from their forthcoming second full-length album, with a feature from G-Dragon that has drawn significant attention since the track went live. The collaboration is notable not only for the pairing, a veteran rapper and a fourth-generation girl group, but because it arrives at a moment when both acts are navigating active comeback cycles under their respective labels.

The single is built around a grand synthesizer bass and a heavy hook, forming the backbone of what SM Entertainment describes as a hip-hop-based dance track. G-Dragon participated both in the feature and in crafting his own rap sections, an arrangement that gave him measurable creative input beyond a standard verse-for-hire.

Chartwise, 'WDA' entered the top 10 of the iTunes Top Songs chart in 17 countries, among them Thailand, Portugal, Vietnam, Brazil, and Indonesia, in the days following release. On QQ Music, China's largest streaming platform, the single earned a Gold Album certification, which the platform awards when a release crosses 250,000 yuan (approximately 55 million Korean won) in digital sales. It also ranked first on QQ Music's digital album sales singles chart, its music video chart, its Korean music video chart, and the integrated K-pop chart across five Tencent Music platforms.

The music video anchors the release conceptually. It depicts bus collision sequences and collapsing clones, imagery SM describes as expressing the anxiety of an era defined by infinite replication and consumption. The central question, what is real when original and copy are indistinguishable?, is one aespa has been building toward since their 2020 debut.

The group launched with the ae-aespa concept, a set of virtual alter-egos that exist in a parallel digital world and interact with the real members. That lore, developed across years of music videos, SM Universe content, and social media, has always been thematically adjacent to questions about AI and digital identity. With 'WDA', the group moves the concept further along that axis, not by simply inserting AI-generated visuals into a music video, but by using the medium to interrogate the premise itself. For a group whose entire mythology rests on the tension between the real and the virtual, the timing aligns with broader public conversation around AI in ways that feel less like a campaign strategy and more like a natural extension of what they have been doing all along.

SM Entertainment notes that 'WDA' aims to convey the tension and disorientation of a world where the real and virtual coexist, rendered in what it calls aespa's own voice.

The full album, LEMONADE, is set for release on May 29 at 1:00 p.m. KST and will include ten tracks in total, with 'WDA' among them. Following the release, aespa will launch a new world tour beginning in Seoul in August, with stops including Taipei, São Paulo, and Mexico City.
