24.9% to Doctor X: Kim Ji-won's High-Stakes Comeback Starts October 9
Kim Ji-won returns to TV on October 9 in Doctor X, her first drama since Queen of Tears set a tvN all-time ratings record. The SBS medical noir puts her in the role of a rogue surgical genius taking on a corrupt hospital empire.

Kim Ji-won is back, and SBS is making sure everyone knows it. The actress, whose last drama Queen of Tears peaked at 24.9% viewership to become the highest-rated series in tvN history, has chosen Doctor X: The Age of the White Mafia as her return, with the show's first episode set to air on October 9 at 9:50 p.m.
The series is a medical noir framed around the SBS "cider universe", the broadcaster's proven formula for satisfying, villain-crushing genre stories. Previous entries include Taxi Driver, Hot Blooded Priest, and Judge from Hell, all of which built strong audience loyalty on the back of morally righteous leads demolishing corrupt power structures. Doctor X marks the first time SBS has applied that template to the medical world, pairing the cathartic drama of a hospital rebellion with a darker, noir undercurrent about a secret organization operating inside one of Korea's major medical institutions.

Kim Ji-won's character and the cast around her
Kim Ji-won plays Kye Su-jeong, a surgical prodigy so relentlessly focused on operating that colleagues have started calling her "the unhinged one of the OR", the character whose Hippocratic oath, it turns out, hides a story the second teaser only begins to unpack. She is flanked by a cast that gives the show immediate weight: Lee Jung-eun and Son Hyun-joo both have reputations that signal serious drama, and Kim Woo-seok rounds out the main lineup.

The hospital itself is populated by a richly specific ensemble. Lee Jin-hee plays anesthesiologist Professor Jo Won-jin, the steady center of the OR. Kim Young-min brings tension as surgical professor Do Yun-sik, a man quietly angling for the director's chair. Lee Sung-wook joins as Professor Bae Heung-gon, nicknamed "the god of laparoscopy," while Kwon Seung-woo plays a YOLO-coded resident named Ma Seong-gyu. Heo Jun-seok rounds out the hospital staff as emergency medicine professor Kim Seong-jin, the warmest presence in an otherwise thorny roster.
Running parallel to the hospital scenes is a secret gathering place called "Jang Hee-suk's Doctor Agency," which functions as a base of operations for characters resisting the medical conglomerate's grip. Veteran actor Choi Deok-moon leads that group as Yang Eung-gu, a North Korean defector trained in traditional medicine who becomes Kye Su-jeong's closest ally.
On the other side of the ledger, the power structure arrayed against her is considerable. Kim Young-ah plays Lee Seon-ae, a hospital management director who will use any means to protect the institution's interests. Choi Gwang-il appears as Gu Bon-pyeong, the chairman behind a secretive doctors' society called the Magnolia Club. Jeong Seok-yong completes the trio as Kim Chang-su, the head of the city's medical association and a Magnolia Club insider.

What the second teaser revealed
The second teaser, released on the 16th, opens with Kye Su-jeong alone in graduation robes, reciting the Hippocratic oath as if sealing a private vow rather than completing a public ceremony. The images that follow cut between her conducting surgery with unsettling confidence and a moment in which she's grabbed by the throat, the show's tone shifting between clinical precision and genuine danger inside the same sequence. The teaser closes on a single line of dialogue from hospital director Bu Seung-gwon: "Is Kye Su-jeong Doctor X?" Her expression gives nothing away.

It is a smart piece of promotional filmmaking. The premise of a genius surgeon dismantling corrupt hospital power is legible from the first frame, but the question of what "Doctor X" actually means, and what Kye Su-jeong's real history is, gives the show a mystery layer to sustain early-episode interest beyond the procedural drama.
With Kim Ji-won's post-Queen of Tears heat, SBS's established genre track record, and a cast deep enough to carry several storylines simultaneously, Doctor X: The Age of the White Mafia is the clearest awards-season swing the network has made all year. It premieres October 9.
