From 24.9% Ratings to a Surgical Dark Hero: Kim Ji-won Returns in Doctor X

SBS has confirmed October 9 as the premiere date for Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia, the network's new Friday-Saturday drama. The announcement comes alongside the release of script reading footage, offering the first extended look at a cast built around Kim Ji-won's highest-profile return to television since Queen of Tears closed its run with a peak rating of 24.9%.

What the show is

Doctor X is described by its production team as a medical noir in the "cider" tradition, a Korean shorthand for stories where a single forceful protagonist cuts through institutional corruption with satisfying directness. The SBS cider universe has previously produced Chief Kim, Taxi Driver, Fiery Priest, and Judge from Hell, all of which built loyal audiences on the same formula. This is the franchise's first venture into a hospital setting.

The series centers on Kye Su-jeong, a freelance surgeon dispatched through a medical staffing agency to Guseo University Hospital, a fictitious institution riddled with internal politics and corruption. Her character is framed in the promotional materials as a surgical genius with no interest in hierarchy or compromise, the kind of outsider whose competence is itself a form of disruption. Kim Ji-won, who earned broad recognition for her emotionally demanding work in Queen of Tears, takes on a noticeably different register here: a dark-hero figure whose formidable operating-room presence is set against a deliberately contrasting private side.

The cast and early chemistry

Director Lee Jeong-rim and writer Pyeon Seong-geun lead the creative team. The script reading brought together the full principal cast at a single session, which the production released footage of publicly.

Lee Jung-eun plays Jang Hee-suk, the head of the staffing agency that employs Kye Su-jeong. The character is written as mercenary on the surface but strategically shrewd underneath, functioning partly as comic relief and partly as a fixer for the chaos her prized surgeon tends to leave behind. Lee Jung-eun's dynamic with Kim Ji-won is being positioned as one of the show's central relationships, extending beyond a simple employer-employee arrangement.

Son Hyun-ju takes the role of Bu Seung-gwon, the director of Guseo University Hospital's branch, a figure trying to stabilize an institution in visible decline. Kim Woo-seok plays Park Tae-gyeong, a privileged intern whose comfortable assumptions about hospital life begin to unravel the moment Kye Su-jeong arrives. The production noted a mentor-subordinate dynamic between the two characters that leans into comedic friction.

The supporting ensemble includes Lee Jin-hee, Kim Young-min, Lee Seong-wook, Kwon Seung-woo, Heo Jun-seok, Choi Deok-mun, Kim Jeong-young, Kim Young-ah, and Choi Gwang-il, all of whom participated in the script reading.

The production team issued a statement following the reading session: "Even at this first gathering, the actors' solid performances and compelling character work pushed the immersion to its peak. Given the explosive synergy the cast has already shown, audiences can look forward to the birth of a new medical dark hero who will carry forward the SBS cider universe."

The framing is deliberate. SBS has cultivated the cider universe as a recognizable brand across several years, and positioning Doctor X as its medical extension is as much a marketing move as a creative one. Whether a hospital setting, with its more procedural demands, translates as fluidly as a courtroom or a taxi is the practical question the series will need to answer when it debuts on the 9th.
