Lim Ji-yeon Steps Out of 'The Glory's Shadow With Her First Full Comedy Role

Lim Ji-yeon, best known for her villainous turn in Netflix's 'The Glory,' is making a deliberate genre pivot with SBS's new romantic comedy 'My Royal Nemesis,' premiering Friday. The series follows an obscure actress possessed by the soul of a Joseon-era villainess as she navigates a second life, and a cold-blooded chaebol heir. International viewers can stream the show on Netflix.

Lim Ji-yeon's next role is a conscious break from the work that made her a household name. The actor, still widely associated with the calculated school bully Yeon-jin from Netflix's The Glory, arrives Friday in SBS's My Royal Nemesis, a self-described "war-like" romantic comedy that asks her to do something she has not done on screen before: play it for laughs.

The premise stacks the tonal contrasts deliberately. Lim plays Seo-ri, a struggling actress whose body becomes host to Dan-sim, the soul of a legendary Joseon-era villainess given a second shot at life. Her foil is Cha Se-gye, played by Heo Nam-jun, a chaebol heir who treats marriage as little more than a corporate merger. The drama's emotional engine is the slow, combative movement from enemies toward something warmer.

Director Han Tae-sub, speaking at a press conference at SBS headquarters in Seoul on Thursday, was direct about where the production is placing its bet. "Lim Ji-yeon herself is our greatest competitive edge," he said. He described a drama designed to put an actor through the full range, romantic comedy, period melodrama, and action, and said Lim delivered beyond what was asked. The script, he noted, carries a line about bad women going wherever they want, and the show's central argument is built around that freedom: what someone does with a life they were not supposed to have.

For Lim, the project was a deliberate choice rather than an assignment. "I came across the script right as I was falling in love with the genre," she said at the press conference. "After a string of dark, heavy thrillers, I was desperate to try something bright, bubbly and genuinely fun." She acknowledged the professional risk in making such a visible turn but expressed unusual confidence in the result. "This character will be just as impactful as Yeon-jin," she said, naming her The Glory role directly. "I've poured my heart and soul into her."

The comparison to Yeon-jin is unavoidable in the broader context of Lim's career. The Glory ran on Netflix in late 2022 and early 2023 and drew significant international viewership, cementing her as one of the more recognizable faces to emerge from that wave of Korean drama exports. The industry pattern for actors in that position tends to run toward consolidation, more of the same genre, more of the same register. A full romantic comedy is a less predictable move, and that is partly what makes the casting interesting to watch.

Heo Nam-jun, who takes the male lead, described his character as a figure whose emotional coldness conceals occasional moments of clumsiness and unguarded humanity, the standard architecture for the rom-com antagonist-turned-love-interest, executed here within a premise that is anything but standard.

My Royal Nemesis premieres on SBS Friday, with international streaming available on Netflix.
