Such a Messy Love Climbs to #1 on Netflix in Just Two Days, Ignoring Backlash
In just two days, Netflix's Such a Messy Love climbs to the top of the charts, blending romance and action while facing off-screen controversies. Starring Jung Hae-in and Ha Young, the show has sparked discussions surrounding the lead's family history.

Netflix's original series Such a Messy Love has taken the streaming platform by storm, rocketing to the top of the charts just two days after its release. Featuring the chemistry between Jung Hae-in and Ha Young, the series jumped five spots, surpassing both the occult historical drama Donggung and the popular film Mr. Kim.

As of the 9th at 10 AM, Such a Messy Love claimed the number one spot in Netflix's 'Top 10 Series in Korea'. After making its international debut on the 7th, it quickly entered the rankings at #6 and climbed to the top within 24 hours. This ascent pushed down previously high-ranking titles, showcasing the series' immediate impact.

The global response has been equally swift. According to FlixPatrol, the day it premiered, Such a Messy Love reached the #5 position in Netflix's global TV show category, marking it as the highest-ranking non-English show at that time. It secured a place in the top ten across 50 countries, including India, Brazil, Mexico, and Singapore.

The series revolves around a complex romantic comedy that follows a prosecutor named Go Eun-sae, played by Ha Young, who suffers from amnesia. She finds herself living with a boxing coach named Jang Tae-ha, portrayed by Jung Hae-in, who claims to be her boyfriend. Their paths cross unexpectedly when Jang, who is preparing for a new life away from his organization, reunites with his first love at a time when she has lost all memory of her past. As he assumes the role of her boyfriend to protect her, the tension mounts, complicating their relationship against a backdrop of crime and action.

Viewers have already begun to resonate with the series, with many expressing their delight on social media. Positive comments include sentiments like "I can’t stop watching" and "This is the romantic comedy I’ve been waiting for."
The key to the series' success lies in the performances of Jung Hae-in and Ha Young. Jung plays Jang Tae-ha with a tough exterior that conceals a steadfast desire to protect his first love. Director Kim Jang-han prioritized Jung for the role, believing that his strong and earnest persona would resonate well in the romantic comedy genre.
Ha Young, known for her roles in dramas such as Severe Trauma Center, Iduna!, and The Fabulous, marks her first leading role in a romantic comedy with this series. Gaining a reputation as Netflix’s go-to actress, she has captivated audiences with her charming appeal.
However, controversy surrounds Ha Young, as it was revealed that her great-grandfather, An Sang-ho, has been linked to allegations of pro-Japanese behavior during Colonial Korea. While her agency, Bisters Entertainment, confirmed that An Sang-ho is her ancestor, they denied the allegations related to supporting Japanese colonial activities. Nonetheless, these claims have revived discussions around his history, particularly highlighting his interactions with pro-Japanese organizations during the Japanese occupation.
Amidst this backdrop, Ha Young's rising profile in Such a Messy Love serves as both a personal triumph and a moment of scrutiny. With the show's rapid ascent to the top of the charts and its global response proving strong, it's worth keeping an eye on whether Such a Messy Love will continue to ride this wave of success.
