Kim Yoo-jung Becomes a Spy for a Ticket to America in 100 Days of Lies

On the October 17 episode of tvN's 20th anniversary special 100 Days of Lies, Kim Yoo-jung's Lee Ga-gyeong agreed to become a spy on one condition: that the resistance send her to America. The episode ended with her confessing to Park Jin-young's character, Kim Tae-woong, and then being kidnapped.

The episode was a weekend-slot installment of the drama, which airs Saturdays and Sundays on tvN. It moved Ga-gyeong from a reluctant bystander to an active participant in the story's resistance plot.

A bluff at the inn

The episode opened with Ga-gyeong denying that she was a pickpocket. Tae-woong (who also goes by Sato Hideo) held up a wallet bearing his own name and asked what it was, then said he would give her one last chance.

Japanese police then arrived. Tae-woong showed his Government-General identification and said that Sato Shinichi was his father, which made the officers lower their guns and bow. They said they were hunting members of the Gukgudan, the resistance group behind the attempted assassination of the Government-General's chief administrator, and that core members had moved toward Jongno.

Mr. Kim (Choi Dae-hoon) insisted the matter had nothing to do with independence fighters and said it was a watermill in Jongno. Ga-gyeong, interpreting, told the police that young men and women there played a sport in teams of two. Just before Tae-woong could speak about her identity, she pressed him, warning that if she were taken away he would never recover the pawn ticket, and asking who Shin Tae-jin was. Tae-woong then described her as part of his party and a player of a two-person sport, resting a hand on her shoulder.

When word came that a likely suspect had been caught, Tae-woong was asked to identify the face. He told Ga-gyeong not to think of running while he was gone. She swapped clothes with an inn guest and fled.

Recruiting an unwilling spy

Elsewhere, a bounty of 500 won was placed on Han Cheol-ryong (Kim In-kwon). Kim Myung-nam (Park Jung-yeon) handed him funds to hide, saying she was the daughter of a pro-Japanese textile company owner and wanted to atone for being unable to punish her father herself. She said her father's secretary, Lee Young-bok (Lee Sun), had diverted company money to make this possible.

Yoo So-ran (Kim Hyun-joo) proposed targeting the vacant English interpreter post at the Government-General to learn what was happening inside. She thought of Ga-gyeong, who had posed as a live-in maid. Yoo Philip (Lee Moo-saeng) objected that they could not send someone with no interest in independence. Ga-gyeong's case, as relayed in the episode, was that the girl wanted something more than money: to go to America. Offering that, she argued, would leave her unable to refuse or betray them.

The Gukgudan lured her in. So-ran offered to send her to America if she would work with them and enter the Government-General. Shocked, Ga-gyeong asked whether she was being told to become a spy. She walked out shouting that if this was independence work, she should not have children, but then learned So-ran's account of why she could not get to America was true.

After some turns, Ga-gyeong returned and said she would be a spy if they sent her to America. She entered the Government-General.

Four encounters and a confession

Ga-gyeong considered Tae-woong more Japanese than the Japanese, while he believed she was Yoo Philip's lover. Tae-woong pressed her on why their paths had crossed four times. Her answer was "I like you. Since the first time we met." She was kidnapped afterward.

What the confession means, whether it is part of her cover or something she means, is left open as the episode closes.
