Netflix confirmed on the 19th that Trauma Center will return for two more seasons, produced together, and that actor Ha Young has left the series after halting all activity amid a pro-Japan controversy. Jeong Ye-in joins the cast to play Jang-mi Cheon, the veteran nurse on the trauma team, replacing her.

Producing back-to-back seasons has become a common way for streamers to lock in cast and crew for a hit, and the order follows a first season that reached the Top 10 in 63 countries after its release in January last year. The series is adapted from the web novel of the same name by Hansan Iga, a former doctor who began serializing it in 2019. It follows a gifted surgeon, Baek Kang-hyuk, who spent years on the battlefield and takes charge of a trauma team that exists mostly on paper.

Who is back, and who is new

Ju Ji-hoon returns as Baek Kang-hyuk. Choo Young-woo plays Yang Jae-won, who is positioned as Baek's successor, Yoon Kyung-ho is Han Yu-rim, now promoted to head of planning at Hankuk University Hospital, and Jung Jae-kwang is Park Kyung-won. Jeong Ye-in is the sole announced newcomer to the core team. Netflix said she was cast after a competitive audition, and that other new actors will also join the two seasons.

Ha Young had been part of the project before the controversy, and recent reports said she stopped all activity as it spread. The announcement did not go into the circumstances of her departure beyond the recasting.

What the new seasons promise

Season 2 is described as a story of bigger disasters and unpredictable crises, with Baek and the team trying to clear blockages in the system and protect the critical golden hour for patients. Director Lee Do-yoon, who directed season 1, returns and also writes the season 2 script. For season 3 he is joined by a newcomer writer credited as Tomasi.

Netflix has not set a release date for either season.
