tvN's 100 Days of Lies opened to a national household average of 5.3% and a peak of 7.2% on its first night, making it the top-rated program across cable and general programming channels in its time slot. For a period drama launching in a competitive weekend slot, that's a solid foundation, and it arrives on the back of a premiere episode that wasted little time putting its lead actress through her paces.

Kim You-jung plays Lee Ga-gyeong, Gyeongseong's most accomplished pickpocket in 1932, during the Japanese colonial occupation. Her immediate goal is practical: save enough money to buy passage to the United States. What derails that plan, within the first episode, is a bag she steals from independence activist Yoo So-ran (Kim Hyun-joo) that turns out to contain bullets connected to a plot to assassinate Sato Shin-ichi (Jin Seon-kyu), the Japanese Government-General's chief administrator.

What the first episode established

The premiere sketched the show's central relationship quickly. Trying to squeeze money from Yoo So-ran and her associate Yoo Philip (Lee Moo-saeng) over the bullets, Ga-gyeong walks into their home and finds herself face-to-face with Sato Hideo (Park Jin-young), the administrator's adopted son, whose wallet she had already lifted at Gyeongseong Station. The standoff reveals that Hideo also grew up as a Korean pickpocket, and that like Ga-gyeong he speaks Korean, Japanese, and English fluently. The shared background between a woman working outside the colonial system and a man operating inside it is the tension the series plans to run on.

The episode's tonal pivot came near the end. A man disguised as a cake delivery worker (Kam Woo-sung) arrived at the house with a gun, took Ga-gyeong hostage, and demanded she lead him to the chief administrator. Ga-gyeong, switching to English so Hideo could understand without tipping off the intruder, managed to convey that an assassination was in play. It was an efficient piece of staging that also gave Kim You-jung a chance to shift from the episode's lighter register into something more compressed and urgent.

Kim You-jung's performance moved across that full range in a single hour: the casual composure of someone who lifts wallets for a living, the quick-witted charm she brings to the first encounter with Hideo, and the controlled tension of the hostage scene. The multilingual dimension of the role is more than a character detail. Lee Ga-gyeong's cover inside the Government-General is as a disguised interpreter, so the production needed an actress who could make code-switching look natural under pressure. Kim You-jung handled Korean, Japanese, and English across the episode.

The creative team behind the show

100 Days of Lies is a 16-episode spy romance written by Ryu Bo-ri, who previously wrote Do You Like Brahms?, and directed by Yoo In-sik and Kim Yoon-jin. Yoo In-sik is best known internationally for Extraordinary Attorney Woo, which ran on Netflix in 2022 and became one of the more widely watched Korean series of that year. His direction here is described as faster-paced, suited to the action-adjacent demands of the spy genre rather than the quieter rhythms of a legal drama.

The series is also a commemorative production, developed as part of tvN's 20th anniversary special slate. That framing typically means a higher budget and a degree of institutional attention from the network, which may partly explain the strong cast assembled around Kim You-jung.

Episode 2 aired on the 11th at 9:10 p.m. KST.
