Kim Young-kwang's character in Netflix's Recharge Me shares his first kiss with the female lead by accident: a stumble in a crowded broadcaster lobby ends with the two of them colliding lips-first, headbutt style. The scene sets the tone for a romantic comedy that Korean reports say shows off exactly why the actor keeps getting cast as the genre's safe pair of hands.

The series, released on the 9th, is a romantic comedy about a man whose artificial heart battery has run flat and a woman who can generate electricity. Kim plays Baek Ho-rang, a third-generation chaebol heir who has the looks and the money but needs his heart recharged. Chae Soo-bin plays Na Bo-bae, the woman whose power turns out to be the cure.

A charge with a deadline

After the lobby collision, the two meet again in the same hospital room following Ho-rang's battery replacement surgery. He is wary of Bo-bae at first, then realizes she can recharge his depleted battery. With three months to go before his next operation, he has to keep her close.

He apologizes for his earlier rudeness, wins her over, and the two end up living together. What starts as a arrangement of necessity gradually turns into real attraction, and the series builds its romantic tension from that shift.

Keeping a cold character human

According to the Korean report, Kim's strength here is a plain, understated delivery that still lands the romantic beats. A chaebol heir can easily come off as icy and arrogant, and he is credited with working in enough human warmth to avoid that. As Ho-rang's feelings deepen with each recharge, Kim reportedly carries the change through a steady voice and small shifts in expression, balancing comedy and sweetness.

It fits a long run of romance credits. He has appeared in the film Take Me Home (known in Korean as Your Wedding) and the dramas Nice to Meet You, I Love You, Hello? It's Me!, The Man Living at Our House and Goho's Starry Nights, and has earned the nickname of an original rom-com master. His next drama is Queen of Taming, which the report says is already raising expectations.
