Shin Dong-yup's One Parenting Rule: No Nagging, But Always Say Hello

Veteran broadcaster Shin Dong-yup appeared on Sung Si-kyung's YouTube channel late last month and offered a candid look at his parenting philosophy, one that has less to do with grades and more to do with something most parents stop enforcing by middle school. In an industry where celebrities are often reluctant to discuss family life in any detail, his directness was notable.

Shin, who has been one of South Korea's most recognizable TV hosts for over two decades, said he largely leaves his two children alone when it comes to academics. "I don't hover, and I don't nag," he explained. The one thing he does repeat, consistently, is a simple instruction: greet people well.

His reasoning was practical rather than sentimental. As fewer people bother with greetings, he said, those who still do it genuinely will stand out. He used a specific example: the security guard at his apartment building. When the guard warmly greets his family, Shin wants his children to respond in kind, not reflexively but with real acknowledgment. The same standard applies within the family itself.

"As time goes on and fewer people greet others, if you're still good at it when you're older, that becomes something rare," he said. Shin married PD Seon Hye-yun in 2006 and has a son and a daughter together.

The same week, his own YouTube channel, Jjanhan Hyung Shin Dong-yup, posted an episode featuring guests Boom, Neokssal, and Hanhae that had audiences talking for a different reason. Boom opened by telling Shin he still carries guilt over what has since become known between them as the fake wine incident.

Shin explained the backstory. During the early planning stages of the variety show Amazing Saturday, the production team was working through format concepts and Shin personally recommended Boom as an MC, drawing on their earlier collaboration on a program called Champagne, where Boom's improvisational instincts during an "ideal type worldcup" segment had impressed him. "Boom was genuinely the biggest reason that segment worked," Shin said.

Shortly after Boom joined the cast of Amazing Saturday, he arrived at the green room with a gift: a bottle of wine he described as expensive, over a million won, that he had received from someone else and was passing along. Shin accepted it graciously. Months later, alone and in what he described as a quiet, ceremonial mood, he opened it, took one sip, and walked straight to the sink.

The wine was fake. Shin knew the label well enough to recognize immediately that something was wrong. He said nothing to Boom at the time, but the story eventually reached him through a mutual producer. Boom, now visibly embarrassed on camera, had apparently been unaware the bottle wasn't genuine. Hanhae's verdict, delivered without hesitation, was that it was "not just a fake, but a lazy fake," which earned a laugh from the room.

Shin moved to defuse it. He said he took the gesture at face value and assumed the person who originally gave Boom the bottle had done so with genuine goodwill. The postscript, he added, was that Boom later showed up with a very good bottle of wine to make amends.
