SM Entertainment is done sending warnings. On the 28th, the agency posted a formal statement on its official social media accounts announcing it has referred cases to law enforcement against individuals spreading malicious content targeting aespa's Winter, with zero-tolerance language that left little room for interpretation.

The statement listed what had been circulating across platforms: false information, defamation, personal attacks, and sexual harassment directed at Winter. SM said it had already run the evidence through outside legal counsel and would pursue criminal complaints in stages, rather than settling for a cease-and-desist.

No hiding behind anonymity

The part that will get attention from chronic anonymous posters: SM named anonymous forums and social media platforms specifically, and said geography is not a shield. The agency intends to secure the data needed to identify both the original posters and anyone who shared the content, then hand that over to the relevant authorities, domestic or international, whichever applies.

The zero-tolerance line was explicit. SM said anyone caught will face "full legal responsibility under a zero-tolerance principle, with no leniency or settlement." That phrasing closes off the typical resolution path where an agency threatens action, the offender apologizes privately, and both sides move on quietly. SM is not offering that exit here.

Where Winter stands right now

Meanwhile, aespa released SYNK : COMPLaeXITY – 2026 Special Digital Single on the 14th. The timing of this legal push, arriving two weeks after a new release, is the kind of move that suggests SM had been building the file for a while and was waiting for the right moment to act rather than reacting in real time. Whether that reads as calculated or simply thorough depends on your read of how these things tend to go.
