'Trap of Desire' (욕망의 덫) arrived on KBS 2TV with a 6.4% nationwide rating for its first episode, according to Nielsen Korea figures released on August 11, a solid opening for a daily drama built around obsession, class conflict, and long-simmering revenge.

'Trap of Desire' Debuts at 6.4%: Jealousy, Art Fraud, and a Studio Fire in Episode 1

The premiere set three women on a collision course. 고은설 (played by 전혜원) is a warmly raised, genuinely talented art student who wins the gold prize at a school competition, the kind of quiet achievement that, in this world, makes her a target. 강해라 (주새벽), the sole heiress to the powerful Cheongma Group conglomerate, loses both the prize and the attention of her upperclassman crush, 차석진 (설정환), to 고은설 in the span of a single episode. The humiliation lands hard, and 주새벽 plays the shift from wounded pride to barely contained fury with a tightly wound physicality that makes 강해라 genuinely unsettling to watch.

The third figure in this triangle is 주미란 (장서희), who has infiltrated the Cheongma household as 강해라's nanny while hiding an agenda of her own. Episode 1 keeps her true motives close to the chest, she moves through scenes with a studied attentiveness that reads as care on the surface and calculation underneath. She quietly helps 강해라 attempt to submit another student's artwork under her own name, a scheme that gets exposed by 강해라's father, 강영훈 (유태웅), before it can do any damage. The result is that 고은설 is chosen as the school's official competition representative, which only deepens 강해라's rage.

That rage has immediate, physical consequences. Consumed by jealousy, 강해라 attempts to destroy 고은설's painting and sets off a fire in the art studio, the episode's most visceral moment and an early signal of exactly how far this show is willing to push its central antagonist.

The drama is billed as the story of a woman wrongly accused of murder who fights to reclaim her life against those who conspired against her, a setup that positions 주미란 less as a straightforward villain and more as a morally complex figure whose methods may be dark but whose cause the audience is eventually meant to understand.

What makes the casting genuinely interesting is the genre reversal at its center. 장서희 built her reputation on cathartic revenge heroines: her roles in MBC's Mermaid Girl and SBS's Temptation of Wife made her one of Korean daily drama's most recognizable faces precisely because audiences loved watching her win. Here, she is the one pulling strings in the shadows, and the question the premiere leaves open is whether that history works as irony or as misdirection. Either way, it gives longtime fans a reason to lean forward.

With the show's tone and central conflict clearly established from the first hour, Trap of Desire looks to have the bones of a propulsive daily drama. Whether the ratings hold will depend on how quickly 주미란's hidden past comes into focus.
