Jang Seo-hee Returns to KBS After 12 Years: This Time as the Villain

Jang Seo-hee is coming back to KBS, and she's done playing the wronged woman. After 12 years away from the network, the actress who became synonymous with South Korea's revenge drama genre returns in Trap of Desire (욕망의 덫) as Joo Mi-ran, the cold-blooded antagonist at the center of the story, a full 180-degree turn from every role that made her famous.

The new KBS2 daily drama premieres on Monday, July 10 at 7:50 p.m., taking over the slot from Red Pearl.

From revenge queen to absolute villain

For anyone tracking Korean daily dramas, Jang Seo-hee's name carries serious weight. Her back-to-back performances in MBC's Mermaid Girl (2002) and SBS's Temptation of Wife (2008) rewrote the rulebook for the genre: the first peaked at a 47.9% nationwide rating, the second at 37.5%. Both earned her the grand prize at their respective networks' acting awards, and both are still cited as defining examples of the Korean revenge drama.

Her last daily drama was MBC's Witch's Game, which wrapped in 2023, and her last KBS appearance was Cuckoo's Nest in 2014. Trap of Desire marks her return to both the genre and the network.

What makes the casting genuinely interesting is how deliberately it inverts her legacy. Jang Seo-hee acknowledged the shift with some humor at the project's script reading on the 7th: "I've spent so many years playing characters who feel wronged and fight back. This is the first time I'm playing the final villain. I've always been the one getting revenge, this time I'm the one it gets taken on."

Her character, Joo Mi-ran, is a former nanny who has climbed to become head of PR at the powerful Cheongma Scholarship Foundation. On the surface she projects warmth and reliability; underneath, she is a calculating strategist driven by an unrelenting hunger for power and status. The 30-second teaser cuts between her iconic scenes from Cuckoo's Nest and her new incarnation, landing on the line: "I told you, it's Joo Mi-ran, not Joo Ae-suk." The promotional poster, which shows her surrounded by reaching hands while staring directly into the camera, does the rest of the work. The tagline: "If it's a life worth having, whatever it takes."

Online reaction has been immediate. Comments on the teaser run along the lines of "the poster alone has more presence than most full trailers" and "her villain era is going to be something else." Attendees at the script reading noted that she held the room through sheer restraint, keeping the character's menace understated rather than theatrical, which, given her history of explosive emotional performances, reads as a deliberate choice.

The story and the new faces

Trap of Desire is directed jointly by Lee Dae-kyung and Jung Gwang-su (Youth of May) and written by Koo Ji-won (Urachacha My Life). The central story follows Go Eun-seol, a woman framed for murder who loses everything and fights to reclaim her fate against a system rigged against her.

The lead role belongs to Jeon Hye-won, in her first top-billed drama performance. She described the show in three words: dopamine, revenge, catharsis. The second teaser, released on the 28th, gives a clearer picture of her character's arc: Go Eun-seol becomes entangled with Kang Hae-ra (Joo Sae-byeok), the heiress to the Cheongma Group, whose relentless harassment and a fire in an art room that leaves a serious scar on Eun-seol's neck set the story's tragedy in motion. The teaser closes on Eun-seol's vow after she is falsely accused: "Wait. I will find you, and I will make you pay."

Seol Jeong-hwan plays Cha Seok-jin, Eun-seol's partner and a key strategist at Cheongma Group. Yoon Hae-young and Yoo Tae-woong appear as a married couple within the Cheongma hierarchy, each harboring their own ambitions. A past connection between Go Eun-seol's mother Park Hee-jeong (Seo Yu-jeong) and Joo Mi-ran is also seeded as a thread that will tighten as the series progresses.

The combination of a proven creative team, a strong ensemble, and Jang Seo-hee operating in genuinely new territory makes Trap of Desire one of the more anticipated KBS daily dramas in recent memory. Whether it can approach the ratings legacy she built two decades ago is the question the network is quietly hoping it answers.
