Jang Seo-hee Returns to Daily Drama With KBS Revenge Thriller 'Trap of Desire'

Jang Seo-hee, whose performance in MBC's Mermaid remains one of the highest-rated single episodes in Korean television history at 47.9% national household viewership, is making her return to daily drama with KBS 2TV's Trap of Desire, which premieres on the 10th at 7:50 p.m. as the follow-up to Red Pearl. The show arrives at a moment when daily dramas on KBS have been quietly rebuilding their audience base, and the casting of an actress with Jang's track record signals the network's intent to treat the slot seriously.

Trap of Desire is produced by Studio Bom and directed by Lee Dae-kyung and Jung Gwang-su, with a script by writer Gu Ji-won. The premise centers on a woman wrongly accused of murder who works to reclaim her stolen life against the schemes of a far more calculating adversary. That adversary is Ju Mi-ran, the role Jang Seo-hee will play.

What distinguishes the show's structure, according to writer Gu Ji-won, is that the antagonist is not a passive participant who stumbles into wrongdoing. "Trap of Desire is not a story where the villain gets caught up in events," Gu said. "It's a structure where she designs the board herself, moves the other characters, and drives the drama." That framing places Jang's character at the center of the plot's mechanics, which is less common in the revenge genre than it might seem: most daily dramas of this type organize their tension around the wronged protagonist's gradual discovery of the truth, while the antagonist remains reactive. Here, Ju Mi-ran's calculated ambition is the engine.

Director Lee Dae-kyung described reading the script for the first time as encountering "the intertwining desires of various characters, and the process by which those desires begin to cross lines" as the drama's central pull. He identified three keywords he sees running through the material: desire, boundary-crossing, and universality. The goal, he said, is for viewers to move through sympathy, anger, grief, and love across the run of the series, rather than settling into a fixed moral position.

"The beginning and end of Trap of Desire is character," Lee added. "More than anything else, I've made it my primary objective to look closely at the inner lives of the people in this story and to capture the actors' performances with precision."

Gu Ji-won was direct about what the show is trying to avoid. Rather than a straightforward victim-punishes-perpetrator arc, she said the drama is interested in the question of how cruel a person can become when a single unchecked ambition warps two people's fates simultaneously. "Through the fated contrast between the false and the real, we want to go beyond a simple good-versus-evil framework," she said.

The second lead, Go Eun-seol, is played by Jeon Hye-won. Gu described the dynamic between Jang and Jeon as the show's strongest asset: "The intense ensemble of Jang Seo-hee and Jeon Hye-won, who have completed the characters of the twisted ambition of Ju Mi-ran and the truth-pursuing Ko Eun-seol, will be Trap of Desire's greatest weapon."

Director Lee was candid about why Jang was cast first. "Jang Seo-hee is an actress who needs no introduction," he said. "I felt she was the performer who could make Mi-ran most convincing." He noted that the casting process across the ensemble prioritized actors with distinct image contrasts and different registers of delivery, a practical consideration in daily drama production where viewers watch the same performers across hundreds of episodes and tonal variety has to carry significant load.

Both Lee and Gu closed their remarks with a statement about what they hope lingers after the series ends: a drama that leaves "a weighty impression on the heart," and a message that even in the most unjust circumstances, it is love and will that ultimately lift a person back up.
