BLACKPINK's AI Hanbok Photoshoot Has Fans Divided Over Cultural Accuracy
An AI-generated hanbok photoshoot featuring BLACKPINK has stirred debate online, with fans questioning whether the images truly reflect Korean traditional dress. Reactions range from genuine admiration to concerns about a blurred pan-Asian aesthetic.

An AI-generated photoshoot depicting BLACKPINK members in hanbok has been circulating online, and the response has been anything but uniform. Fans landed in two fairly distinct camps: those charmed by the bold visuals, and those who felt the images had drifted away from what hanbok actually looks like.
The most consistent criticism was that the designs read as a mixture of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese influences rather than anything distinctly Korean. Several commenters pointed out that certain garments looked more Chinese in silhouette, and one noted that the widened, fixed quality of the subjects' eyes felt stylistically off. The phrase "oriental-themed" came up more than once, used to signal that the overall mood felt regional rather than specifically rooted in Korean dress.
Not everyone was bothered by that reading. At least one commenter pushed back on the idea that hanbok has to look understated or demure to count as hanbok, pointing to the color palette as having a 90s energy that felt current rather than historically faithful. That argument did not fully land with the skeptics, but it reflects a genuine split in how people think about the boundaries of traditional dress when processed through AI image generation.
Jisoo was the one member singled out for praise, with several fans noting she suited the hanbok concept particularly well regardless of the broader design questions.
The images were generated using AI, which adds a specific dimension to the cultural accuracy debate. AI tools trained on broad visual datasets have a well-documented tendency to flatten regional distinctions, producing outputs that gesture at "Asian traditional dress" as a single category rather than distinguishing between its very different national forms. Whether that flattening is a flaw in this case or part of the intended aesthetic is, clearly, still being argued out.
