Hyun Bin on life after becoming a dad: family trips have changed everything

Actor Hyun Bin appeared on the SBS variety program Teumannyamyeon (Season 5) on the 1st, and offered one of his more candid glimpses into domestic life since becoming a father. When co-star Yoo Yeon-seok asked whether he had taken a summer vacation, Hyun Bin replied simply: "Since I have a child, I try to go somewhere and do something, anywhere."

The remark carries a bit more weight in context. Hyun Bin and actor Son Ye-jin married in March 2022 and welcomed a son the following November. For a couple who have kept their family life largely out of public view, the comment was a rare, unscripted acknowledgment of how parenthood has quietly reordered his priorities.

A string of family sightings

The comment coincided with a run of vacation photos that have drawn attention over the past few months. In June, Son Ye-jin shared images on social media from a family trip to Okinawa, Japan, showing the couple together and offering a glimpse of their son, now nearly four years old. In July, the family was spotted in Los Angeles, visiting an exhibition space in what appeared to be an ordinary afternoon out, with Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin dressed casually alongside their son.

That pattern of low-key family travel is precisely what Hyun Bin seemed to be describing on air. The show's format, in which celebrity guests join hosts Yoo Jae-seok and Yoo Yeon-seok to visit ordinary members of the public and spend time with them in Anyang, put all four participants in an unusually relaxed, unscripted setting. It is the kind of context in which offhand remarks tend to land differently than a prepared interview.

The lunch money game

The episode also included a segment that gave viewers a different side of the actor. Hyun Bin and fellow guest Woo Do-hwan played a pouring game with Yoo Jae-seok and Yoo Yeon-seok, in which players take turns adding water to a cup and the person who causes it to overflow pays for lunch out of their own pocket. A pre-released clip on SBS's YouTube channel showed Hyun Bin's reaction when he learned the bill would be charged to the players' personal cards rather than covered by the production: "Whose idea was the personal card?"

Yoo Jae-seok and Yoo Yeon-seok, both experienced variety performers, handled the near-full cup with the kind of precision that comes from years on set, drawing genuine amazement from Hyun Bin. "Wow, that's incredible. It actually works," he said, watching water dome above the rim without spilling. When his own turn came, the composed screen presence that has defined roles in films like The Negotiation and the tvN drama Crash Landing on You gave way to visible anxiety. He passed the test and visibly celebrated, prompting Yoo Yeon-seok to note, drily, that he clearly did not want to pay for lunch.

Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin first worked together on The Negotiation and later on Crash Landing on You, the 2019-2020 tvN drama that remains one of the most-watched Korean series internationally. Their relationship becoming public, and then the marriage, followed directly from that professional history. What the Teumannyamyeon appearance added, briefly but clearly, is that the chapter after all of that looks like family trips to Okinawa and trying not to spill water on a Saturday afternoon game show.
