IU Drops a Teaser for 'Unknown Planet' and the Title Might Be Doing Way Too Much Work

IU's new single isn't out yet and it's already the most talked-about release of her year. The Korean title of Unknown Planet is 이 별로부터, which, depending on where you put the space, reads either as "from this planet" or "from a breakup." That's not an accident. That's a title engineered to make people talk.

Edam Entertainment confirmed on the 4th that the digital single drops on the 10th at 6 p.m. KST. A full music video follows on the 16th at midnight. IU's official YouTube channel posted an MV teaser on the 9th, and it's deliberately strange: IU sits across from an unidentified foreign man, the two of them separated by what looks like a vintage video call interface. She holds up a sketchbook. He responds. They appear to be in different spaces entirely. Who he is and what their dynamic means for the song's story hasn't been explained.

The title doing double duty

The wordplay is the story right now. Written with a space, 이 별로부터 means "from this star" or "from this planet." Close the gap and you get 이별로부터, "from a breakup." IU and her team almost certainly knew exactly what they were doing, but the teaser gives nothing away about whether the song itself goes anywhere near that territory. The source material is still locked.

What makes the timing impossible to ignore: IU and actor Lee Jong-suk confirmed their split recently, and this is the first new music she's releasing since. The connection is obvious. Whether it's intentional framing or a very unfortunate coincidence is a separate question, and one EDAM hasn't touched.

A year since the last single

This is IU's first release since the digital single Bye, Summer, which came out in September last year. The gap is partly explained by health issues: she canceled a planned concert in Goyang and postponed her sixth full-length album after a flare-up of patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction, a condition where the tube connecting the middle ear to the throat stays abnormally open. It's a real obstacle for a performing musician, and the delay on the album has been running for a while.

On the 7th, before the teaser dropped, she also revealed a new look in concept photos: a short bob replacing the long hair she'd worn for years. The visual shift, the health comeback, the ambiguous title, the mystery man in the video, IU is clearly building something. Whether the song is about heartbreak, space, or neither, the rollout has done its job.
