Kim Go-eun Wins Grand Prize and Her Best Friend's Reaction Stole the Show

Kim Go-eun won the Grand Prize at the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards on the 31st at Paradise City in Incheon, but the broadcast moment that actually broke through online was not her acceptance speech. It was Lee Sang-i, seated a few rows back, launching out of his chair the instant presenter Shin Min-a read out her name.

The camera caught everything: Lee Sang-i on his feet, mouth open, shouting "Ya, Kim Go-eun!" before he could compose himself, then making his way over to shake her hand with a grin he clearly could not contain. The clip spread quickly, and Korean netizens were quick to notice him before they even registered the winner. Reactions ranged from "I saw Lee Sang-i first" to "It's so funny but so genuinely 5,000% sincere that it's almost touching."

The friendship has deep roots. Both actors were born in 1991 and entered the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts) acting program together as part of the class of 2010, a cohort that tends to produce tight-knit bonds given the school's intensive ensemble training. They have remained close long after graduation, building separate careers while clearly keeping the friendship intact.

Earlier in the same ceremony, Lee Sang-i had already provided one moment of levity. He appeared on stage to dance with the fictional boy group Migakboys from the Tving original series Cook Up a Storm, in which he had a special cameo. Kim Go-eun, watching from the audience, reportedly looked equal parts amused and mortified, the kind of reaction reserved for people who know each other well enough to be embarrassed on each other's behalf.

In her acceptance speech, Kim Go-eun kept the focus on the work. "I have never once taken it for granted that I get to do projects," she said. "With every role, I try to approach it with urgency and a sense of responsibility." She closed by asking audiences and the industry to keep seeking her out: "I want to keep showing new faces as an actor, so please give me more opportunities. I will work hard."

Over the past year, Kim Go-eun appeared in Eun-jung and Sang-yeon, The Price of Confession, and Yumi's Cells 3, a run that made a strong cumulative case for the top prize. The Grand Prize caps what has been one of the more quietly consistent stretches of her career, and if her speech is any indicator, she has no intention of slowing down.
