'Cook Up a Storm' Takes 3 Trophies, But Kim Go-eun's Tearful Grand Prize Speech Steals the Night

Kim Go-eun walked to the stage in tears and left with Korea's most prestigious streaming award. At the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards (청룡시리즈어워즈), held July 31 at Paradise City in Incheon, she claimed the Grand Prize (대상) for a year that saw her headline three streaming series: Eunjung and Sangyeon, The Price of Confession, and Yumi's Cells Season 3.

In her acceptance speech, she made a direct appeal to the industry. "I have never once taken it for granted that I get to work," she said through tears. "I approach every project with urgency and a sense of responsibility. I will work hard enough that you keep finding my face interesting, so please seek me out and give me opportunities. I will keep giving everything I have." It was 14 years into her career since her 2012 film debut Eungo, and her first Grand Prize win.

The ceremony, hosted by TV presenter Jeon Hyun-moo and actress YoonA and broadcast live on KBS2, covered streaming series and variety content released across platforms including Netflix, Disney+, Wavve, Genie TV, Coupang Play, and TVING. Twenty-three works and 48 nominees competed across the awards.

'Cook Up a Storm' leads with three trophies

If Kim Go-eun owned the night emotionally, Cook Up a Storm (취사병 전설이 되다) owned it statistically. The military-cook fantasy comedy, about a private first class who trades his rifle for a kitchen knife and his bandolier for an apron on his way to becoming a legendary army chef, won Best Drama Series, Best Supporting Actor, and the OST Popularity Award. Three trophies from a single show is a strong haul at any ceremony, and the wins landed across very different categories, which points to broad audience and jury appeal rather than a single concentrated push.

Winning Best Supporting Actor, Yun Kyung-ho delivered what may have been the evening's longest acceptance speech. "I genuinely cannot believe this," he said. "I came here thinking just being nominated alongside these actors was already a celebration. Watching the ceremony, I kept thinking about how skilled everyone around me is, and that just made me more determined to work harder." He credited the entire Cook Up a Storm team and framed the award as motivation for the road ahead rather than recognition for what's already done. The OST Popularity Award went to IVE's An Yujin for her contribution to the show's soundtrack.

A couple's night: Park Bo-kyung and Jin Seon-kyu

The ceremony's most unexpectedly moving subplot belonged to Park Bo-kyung, who won Best Supporting Actress for Lady Doua. It was her first acting award since debuting, and she arrived with a career history that included a break in work and, by her own description, an unimpressive resume. She thanked her agency head for auditioning on her behalf when she could not, and credited the directors and writers who took a chance.

Then she turned to her husband, actor Jin Seon-kyu, who was also nominated at the same ceremony, making them the first married couple to be nominated together at the Blue Dragon Series Awards. "My husband is more surprised than I am and crying more than I am right now," she said. "We stopped doing couple accessories after I lost the engagement ring, but now we have matching trophies that can't be lost. Darling, today is day one." The room, by most accounts, was not dry-eyed.

Shin Hye-sun, Park Bo-kyung's co-star in Lady Doua, won Best Actress for the same series, completing an unusual sweep for one show in the acting categories. Shin said she had not expected to win, particularly with Kim Go-eun and Park Ji-hyun also among the nominees. "Sara Kim was a role I absolutely could not have built alone," she said, crediting the production team.

Park Hae-su took Best Actor for The Scarecrow (허수아비) and used part of his speech to announce that he and his partner are expecting their second child. He was unusually generous to his co-star Lee Hee-jun, saying the character would not have worked in three dimensions without him.

Rookies and variety

The Best New Actor award went to Kim Jae-won for Yumi's Cells Season 3, where he played the third in the show's line of love interests opposite Kim Go-eun. "Go-eun noona was someone I admired and leaned on enormously," he said. Best New Actress went to Jeon So-young for Kirigo.

On the variety side, the Best Variety Program award went to Born Single But Want to Date, a dating reality show following participants who have never been in a relationship. The ceremony also introduced a new Best Variety Performer category this year. Kim Won-hun of SNL Korea Season 8 won the men's award, and Kim Sook of Driver: The Rival took the women's award. Kim Won-hun joked in his speech that he had come prepared with a reaction plan for losing, including plans to write certain names in what he called a "death note," before adding that he was grateful enough to spare everyone.

Go Yoon-jung received the Global Icon with LAVIEN Cosmetic award, and the Maren Five Popularity Star awards went to Go Yoon-jung, Byeon Woo-seok, Yoo Jae-suk, and Lee Soo-ji.

For Kim Go-eun, the Grand Prize caps what was quietly an exceptional 12 months of output. Three series in a single eligibility window is an unusual volume for an actor at her level, and the jury's decision to award the top prize rather than spreading recognition across the individual show categories suggests the cumulative weight of that work registered. Her ask from the stage, to be sought out and given chances, read less like a formality and more like a statement of intent.
