Kim Soo-hyun Returns to the Stage: A 20,000-Fan Event in the Philippines Is His First Big Move Since the Controversy

Actor Kim Soo-hyun will take the stage at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila on October 2, with Filipino fashion brand BENCH confirming a fan meeting capacity of 20,000 people, the clearest signal yet that his return to public activity is moving from brand work back into live events.

BENCH, which has had Soo-hyun as a brand ambassador, announced the show on August 4. The Philippines has long been one of his strongest markets, and the choice of venue carries weight: SM Mall of Asia Arena is among Southeast Asia's largest indoor arenas, and filling it requires a fandom that stayed loyal through a difficult stretch.

Soo-hyun previewed the announcement two days earlier, posting a video message to the brand's social media channels. Smiling, he said he had missed fans a great deal and was happy to be saying hello again after so long, adding that he hoped people would look forward to what was coming.

The fan meeting follows more than a year of near-silence after a YouTube channel called Garo Sero Institute published a video in March 2025 citing a phone call with the family of the late actress Kim Sae-ron. The channel's operator claimed Soo-hyun had dated Sae-ron while she was a minor and alleged that pressure from him over debt repayment was a direct factor in her death. Soo-hyun held a press conference to deny the core allegations: he acknowledged the relationship but maintained it began after Sae-ron had come of age, and he argued that recordings released by her family had been manipulated using AI.

Sae-ron's family filed a complaint with police in May 2025 under child welfare law provisions, among other charges. Police recently concluded their investigation and closed the case without referral to prosecutors, effectively clearing Soo-hyun. Meanwhile, the Garo Sero Institute operator was indicted on defamation charges under communications law and is currently in custody awaiting trial.

With the legal cloud lifted, the Manila fan meeting represents his first large-scale public commitment since the controversy broke. If early ticket demand reflects the pre-controversy fanbase, October 2 will be a useful read on how much goodwill held. The ceiling here is high in the Philippines specifically, but how that translates back to domestic Korean activity is still an open question.
