Kim Soo-hyun Returns to the Stage for the First Time in 17 Months, and Indonesian Fans Were in Tears
Kim Soo-hyun made his first public appearance in roughly 17 months on August 23, performing live as a special guest at RCTI's 37th anniversary broadcast special in Jakarta, Indonesia. The actor sang 'Dreaming,' the OST from his 2011 drama Dream High, to an audience of fans who were visibly emotional at his return. The appearance follows Seoul police closing the child welfare law case against him last month without charges.

Kim Soo-hyun walked a red carpet in Jakarta on the 23rd in a white suit and black bow tie, waving to a crowd of Indonesian fans who had been waiting, some of them in tears, for a moment like this. It was his first official public appearance in approximately 17 months, since allegations tied to the late actress Kim Sae-ron brought his activities to a complete halt in March last year.

The occasion was Mahakarya RCTI 37, a four-hour live broadcast special marking the 37th anniversary of RCTI, Indonesia's largest private television network. Kim Soo-hyun appeared as a special guest, taking part in interviews and a live performance before a studio audience that greeted him with the kind of warmth usually reserved for long-awaited reunions.

The performance
For his song choice, Kim Soo-hyun reached back to 2011 and Dream High, the KBS2 drama that helped establish him as a leading man in Korea and across Southeast Asia. He performed "Dreaming," the drama's OST, live, and the nerves were visible. He came in slightly late on the opening phrase and his pitch wavered in spots early on, but he steadied himself, finished the song, and then stood quietly facing the audience afterward: lips pressed together, eyes briefly closed, a smile he seemed to be holding back rather than performing. The response from the crowd was loud enough to make that restraint look earned.

RCTI posted video of the performance on its official social media accounts with a message that read, in part: "We finally got to sing with Kim Soo-hyun. Thank you for coming to Mahakarya RCTI 37. It was the best moment." During the live broadcast, cameras caught Indonesian fans with tears in their eyes as he took the stage.

Back in Korea, Kim Soo-hyun's agency Goldmedalist shared two photos from the Jakarta schedule on the 24th, Kim surrounded by bouquets, balloons, and gift cards, smiling broadly and flashing a V-sign at the camera. The images offered a warmer coda to the appearance than any press statement could have.

The road back
The controversy that sidelined Kim Soo-hyun began in March last year, when allegations surfaced, raised by the family of the late Kim Sae-ron and amplified by the YouTube channel Garo Sero Research Institute, claiming that he had dated Kim Sae-ron while she was still a minor. Kim Soo-hyun held a press conference to deny that the relationship began before she turned 18, and his legal team filed complaints against those making the allegations.

The case moved slowly through the Korean legal system. Last month, on the 29th, the Seoul Seongdong Police Station closed the investigation into the child welfare law violation and false accusation charges against Kim Soo-hyun, finding insufficient evidence to refer the case to prosecutors. His agency stated that investigators had confirmed no relationship occurred during Kim Sae-ron's childhood and that no violation of the child welfare law was established.

On the other side of the dispute, Garo Sero Research Institute operator Kim Se-ui has been indicted and is currently in custody, facing charges including defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act, stalking, violations of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes, attempted coercion, and intimidation. Prosecutors allege he edited KakaoTalk chat screenshots and fabricated audio recordings to make the relationship appear to have started while Kim Sae-ron was underage.

What comes next
Kim Soo-hyun has been rebuilding his public profile through overseas work, which carries less immediate scrutiny than a domestic Korean comeback. He was recently signed as a model for the Philippine lifestyle brand BENCH, and on October 2 he is scheduled to hold a fan meeting at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, a venue with a capacity of around 20,000. It will be his first large-scale fan event since the hiatus began, and for the fans who showed up in Jakarta already knowing every word to a 14-year-old drama OST, it will probably sell out fast.
