Seong Hoon Reflects on Past Mistakes: 'When Things Are Going Well, That's When You Have to Be Careful'

Actor Seong Hoon, best known for his long run on MBC's 'I Live Alone', posted a reflective YouTube video about life's hardships and the danger of complacency during good times. The upload comes nearly three years after a bad-manners controversy on a tvN variety show effectively paused his broadcast career, and ahead of his confirmed return to television in a new MBN drama.

Actor Seong Hoon posted a video to his YouTube channel on the 19th titled 'When Life Is at Its Hardest', framing a quiet fishing trip as an occasion to think aloud about difficulty, resilience, and the particular risk of letting your guard down when everything is going well. The upload arrives at a specific moment in his career: nearly three years after a controversy on tvN's restaurant variety show Queue the Restaurant drew public criticism and quietly brought his broadcast activity to a near halt.

In the video, Seong Hoon uses fishing as a sustained metaphor for what effort can and cannot change. "No matter how hard I try, there are times when it just doesn't work," he says, comparing the tension in a fishing line to the pressures of daily life. "Keep pulling too hard and the line snaps. You have to learn to let go a little depending on the tension."

He goes further, acknowledging that some difficulties resist both willpower and outside help. "There are times when people around you try to help and it still doesn't work, and times when you can't overcome it on your own either," he says. His advice in those moments: let time move through it. "Sometimes it's not a bad method to just release it and let time pass."

The most pointed remark in the video is also the most telling. "If I could go back to the past with all the memories I have now, I think I'd live more wisely," he says. "When things are going well, I'd still enjoy the moment, but I'd tell myself to be careful." Read against the backdrop of his recent history, it lands less as a general life philosophy than as something closer to a personal note.

The controversy he is implicitly circling began in 2022, when Seong Hoon appeared as a guest on tvN's Queue the Restaurant, a show built around the premise of waiting in line for popular restaurants. On air, he said he doesn't wait in lines: "If there's even one person waiting, I go to the place next door." He also ate meat using the communal tongs rather than his own chopsticks, and at one point shook sweat from his head at the table. He reportedly grabbed MC Park Na-rae and said "come with me" in a tone that viewers found dismissive. His agency apologized, saying the behavior "went too far in trying to be entertaining" and expressing regret toward viewers who felt uncomfortable. His variety show appearances dropped off significantly in the months that followed.

Before that incident, Seong Hoon had been a regular on MBC's long-running solo-living reality show I Live Alone, where he built a substantial following. That kind of sustained variety exposure is hard to rebuild once the warmth dissipates, which makes his current approach, patient and low-key, a reasonable one.

He has recently been active on TikTok and YouTube, maintaining contact with fans through personal content rather than broadcast appearances. The channel posting, with its careful, almost pedagogical tone, suggests someone aware of how he is being perceived and choosing to reintroduce himself gradually rather than through a high-profile return.

On the broadcast side, that return is now confirmed. Seong Hoon is set to appear in the new MBN drama The Boss's Explicit Taste, with a premiere scheduled for November.
