MBC Calls Jun Hyun-moo's Kazakhstan Trip Filing an Outline, Not a Script

MBC says the airport permit document for Jun Hyun-moo's Kazakhstan trip was a filming outline, not a script. The filing named the flight and a line of dialogue, so the debate over staging continues.

MBC said on the 16th that the document submitted to Incheon International Airport Corporation for Jun Hyun-moo's Kazakhstan trip on I Live Alone was "a filming outline to obtain permission," not a broadcast script. The network added that the outline was never shared with cast members, that Jun did not know its contents, and that no staging instructions were given.

The explanation follows a disclosure that reopened a dispute running since August. Materials the airport corporation gave to lawmaker Kim Eun-hye of the People Power Party, a member of the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, show that MBC applied on July 22 to film at Terminal 1. The filing covered 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on August 6 at the third-floor departures hall and the Air Astana counter, and listed an 11:10 a.m. flight the same day.

What the filing described

The attached outline went well beyond logistics. It described Jun arriving at the airport "on impulse," studying departure boards at the counter, and saying a line about having been to China too many times and considering Kazakhstan. It then had him phone the actor Koo Sung-hwan and another acquaintance, settle on Kazakhstan and buy a ticket at the Air Astana counter. The materials also included a filming consent form from Air Astana's Korean office, security pledges and equipment and vehicle details.

The episode that aired on August 14 followed a very similar path: Jun looked for a destination at Incheon, asked Koo for advice and chose Almaty.

A shifting series of explanations

The production team's account has evolved. After the broadcast, it said in late August that it had received no filming support or sponsorship tied to the trip. On September 4 it issued a statement acknowledging preparation: staff had judged Kazakhstan a likely pick given Jun's known interests and flight availability, so staff tickets were bought in advance and local filming cooperation was requested. The team said it would have cancelled those tickets and filmed the fallout had Jun chosen elsewhere. It said Jun bought his own ticket at the airport that day, and apologized for not considering that the word "spontaneous" could imply no preparation at all.

Other questions have followed. The team has said it learned late that renting a car in Kazakhstan required a notarization step, confirmed through the Korean embassy. On Almaty's tourism office, it first denied any support, then clarified that it received no money or production funding but did get administrative and on-site filming cooperation. Some viewers have also questioned another cast member's recent episode, citing past street-view images.

Preparation versus predetermination

Reality productions rarely film without contingency plans, especially with a long-time cast member whose habits are predictable, so a plan that matches the outcome does not by itself prove direction. The harder question is what the outline did in practice. Kim Eun-hye argued that dropping labels like "setting off with no plan" would have cost MBC ratings but preserved trust.

For a program in its 13th year whose identity rests on observing real daily life, that is a heavy test. How the production answers will probably matter more than any single document.
