SM Entertainment reported second-quarter operating profit of 52.9 billion won (approximately $38 million), a figure that matched analyst forecasts compiled by Yonhap Infomax and came in 11% above the same period last year. The result fits a pattern the company has been building toward for several quarters: reducing its dependence on album sales and broadening revenue through live events and IP licensing.

Consolidated revenue for the quarter reached 349.6 billion won, up 15.4% year-on-year. Net profit, however, declined 5.6% to 29.2 billion won, a dip the company did not address directly in its disclosure but which likely reflects higher costs associated with scaling up its concert operations.

SM pointed to two main drivers behind the revenue growth. First, the expansion of concert tours by longer-tenured artists, a category that includes groups like Super Junior and Girls' Generation members whose touring economics differ from newer acts because they draw heavily on catalog-era fanbases. Second, a rise in advertising and event appearances tied to artist IP, a revenue line that can be more margin-friendly than physical album production.

The company's standalone concert revenue grew 23.6% in the quarter, while appearance-related income increased 27.9% and merchandise and licensing revenue climbed 22.0%. Those three categories together illustrate how SM has been trying to move beyond the album-release cycle as its primary earnings engine, something the broader K-pop industry has been working through since physical album sales plateaued.

For the second half of the year, SM has disclosed a detailed release schedule across both quarters. In Q3, fans can expect a Red Velvet mini-album, a full-length NCT 127 album, solo mini-albums from SHINee's Minho and WayV, and a single from the Girls' Generation subunit pairing Hyoyeon and Sooyoung. Q4 is similarly dense: full-length albums from Yesung, Taeyeon, Jaehyun, and NCT Dream, along with mini-albums from Choi Siwon and Changmin's unit Choikang Changmin, Xiaojun, and NCT Wish, plus a single from Hearts2Hearts.

On the live side, the second half will be anchored by a new aespa world tour, alongside concert runs from Yunho, Super Junior-83Z, Yesung, Ryeowook, NCT 127, and WayV, as well as a fan meeting tour for NCT Wish. The breadth of that lineup reflects SM's strategy of keeping multiple generations of its roster active simultaneously, which distributes risk and keeps the live revenue line more consistent quarter to quarter.

SM filed the earnings disclosure with Korean regulators on August 5.
