Shin Min-a's $12,690 Gown Fuels Lighting Debate Around The Remarried Empress

Shin Min-a's mint-colored gown in Disney+'s The Remarried Empress costs $12,690 (about 17 million won), according to figures circulating online. That figure landed just as viewers were dismissing the show's costumes as cheap, a reaction that has since shifted toward the lighting and color grading.

The series premiered its first four episodes on the 4th, with two more episodes arriving every Wednesday until all 10 are out. It is Disney+'s first K-romance fantasy, adapted from a webtoon (and web novel) with roughly 2.97 billion cumulative global views, and it was invited to the On Screen section of the 31st Busan International Film Festival before release. For years, Korean platforms have treated that kind of built-in audience as insurance. It also raises the bar: readers of the original arrive with a fixed image of how the palace should look.

The story and the casting

The drama follows Navier (Shin Min-a), empress of the Eastern Empire. Her husband, Emperor Sovieshu (Joo Ji-hoon), has fallen for Rashta (Lee Se-young), a runaway slave, and tells Navier he wants a divorce. Rather than simply accept, she demands approval to remarry Heinley (Lee Jong-suk), a prince of the Western Kingdom.

At a Q&A at Busan, Shin said she focused on Navier's human side and her own emotional arc, so viewers could follow her from betrayal and divorce to choosing a new love. Pre-release coverage leaned on her appearance and poise in the stills, and on how the four leads would interact.

The gowns and the price tags

Once the episodes aired, the reaction split. Some viewers compared the production unfavorably with Bridgerton, calling the costumes the kind of thing a school drama club might wear. Others criticized the actors' hairstyles and speech as lacking detail.

The prices complicated that criticism. The mint dress is reportedly from a Lebanese designer label. A sky-blue beaded gown worn with a tiara is said to be from a British brand at $4,356 (about 5.8 million won), as is a black caped dress at $3,784 (about 5 million won). Online, the response was that the clothes themselves were fine and the problem lay in lighting and filters. Some argued that beadwork needs strong, runway-style lighting to read on screen. One observation worth making: costume budgets and on-screen impact are different things, and a fantasy look can depend as much on grading as on fabric.

Calling it the Disney+ edition of a surprise mystery salon.

  2. 2

Got curious and watched it, and the show is honestly fun.

  3. 3

The script is extremely cringe, but the cast is good. More surprising to see this kind of K-drama on Netflix.

    • (Note: the drama is a Disney+ release.)

  4. 4

It's a romantic fantasy, so the actors could have been made to look more extravagant.

  5. 5

None of the four leads suit this drama, and they just look ugly.

  1. 6

It would look better without that much editing and filtering.

  2. 7

The aesthetics are still a bit...

  3. 8

Watch Bridgerton first and you realize this set really is bad.

  4. 9

Supports the effort to pioneer a new genre, but begs them to cast actors who truly fit the image if they're going to do this.

  5. 10

Feels like the screencaps only show the best scenes they could find.
