SM Entertainment has announced the establishment of a new joint venture, STE, in collaboration with Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) on August 27. This venture, located in Beijing, is set to enhance SM's influence in the Chinese entertainment market.

Zhou Mi, known for his work with the Chinese unit of Super Junior, has been appointed as the CEO of STE. With nearly 20 years of experience in K-pop and a background in SM's China operations, he possesses an in-depth understanding of the local market, which SM believes will be crucial for the future success of this initiative.

The creation of STE follows a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between SM and TME in May, aimed at solidifying their partnership and expanding their strategy in the Greater China region. STE will focus on launching an idol group project targeted at the local market with a debut planned within the next two to three years.

In addition to introducing new talent, STE will oversee audition processes and manage existing SM artists active in China, such as NCT Dream's Renjun and WayV’s Yangyang and Xiaojun. The dual approach of supporting established artists while fostering new talent is intended to solidify SM's presence in the region.

Zhou Mi expressed his commitment to combining SM's intellectual property and content creation strengths with the unique characteristics of the Chinese market. "We aim to introduce differentiated content and create meaningful achievements as a bridge between the two companies," he declared.

With this partnership, the expectations are high for STE to carve out a significant niche in the competitive Chinese entertainment scene, leveraging K-pop's growing influence and the expertise of established artists.
