Train to Busan Returns to Theaters Worldwide in 4K for Its 10th Anniversary

Ten years after it redefined what a zombie film could be, Train to Busan is heading back to theaters worldwide in a 4K remastered version, with North America finally getting the wide release it was denied in 2016.

Distributor NEW announced the global rerelease on July 20, confirming a staggered rollout that begins August 5 in the Philippines, followed by North America on August 14, Japan on August 21, and Italy on September 2. Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Mexico are also slated for screenings in sequence.

The North American expansion is the headline number. When the film originally opened in the United States and Canada in 2016, it was a limited engagement. This time, it screens in more than 500 theaters, a tenfold increase. For a film that built most of its Western following through streaming and word of mouth, that theatrical footprint is overdue.

Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, Train to Busan follows passengers aboard a KTX express from Seoul to Busan as they fight to survive an outbreak of an unknown virus overtaking the train and the country. Starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, and Ma Dong-seok, it drew 11.57 million admissions domestically and grossed $93.5 million worldwide in its original run. The film screened in the Midnight Screenings section at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival before its domestic release.

A spokesperson for NEW described the North American wide release as particularly meaningful, noting it is the first time the film has received full theatrical distribution in the region in the decade since its debut. The company expressed hope that global audiences would experience the film with fresh impact, calling it the work that introduced K-zombie cinema to the world.

With streaming having seeded a large international fanbase for the film over the past decade, early returns on presale interest will be the thing to watch when North American tickets go on sale. A remaster of this scale, in this many markets simultaneously, suggests NEW is betting the anniversary carries real commercial weight. Circle August 14.
