tvN has confirmed that Yoona will lead its Korean remake of Unnatural, the mystery medical drama that drew a devoted following in both Japan and Korea when it first aired on TBS Japan in 2018. The casting places her at the center of a genre that has rarely struggled for local appetite: forensic procedurals have been a reliable staple on Korean cable, and a remake with name recognition already built into its title carries less of the usual market risk.

The series centers on U.D.I., a fictional autopsy and forensic assessment agency. Yoona plays Song Do-eun, a forensic examiner who projects a cool, composed exterior while carrying, according to the production, a warmth that surfaces in her absolute refusal to leave any death unexplained. The character's defining quality is focus rather than flair: the kind of examiner who keeps her footing regardless of what lands on the table.

A source material with proven crossover appeal

The original Unnatural stood out among medical dramas of its era for centering a female forensic scientist at a time when the genre was still largely built around male protagonists. Starring Ishihara Satomi, it became one of the more talked-about Japanese primetime exports in Korea during its run. That built-in familiarity is part of what tvN is working with here: the property already has a reputation to live up to rather than one to establish from scratch.

The screenplay is written by Min Ji-eun, who has spent much of her career in exactly this territory. She wrote both seasons of Partners for Justice and both seasons of Police Station Next to Fire Station, and in 2019 she received the Do-sang Forensic Culture Award, a recognition given to media and cultural figures who help bring forensic science to a broader public audience. That specific credential is worth noting: the original Unnatural was itself praised for the care it took with procedural accuracy, so the choice of a writer with that background is not incidental.

Direction is handled by Park Yu-young, whose previous credits include the dramas Kidnapping Day and Good Girl Busemi.

A 2027 premiere on tvN

The production team said they expect Yoona's energy to complement Song Do-eun's more guarded qualities, framing the character as someone whose human warmth is visible precisely because it exists alongside real resolve. tvN announced on the 18th that Unnatural is scheduled to broadcast in 2027.
