The peak came in the episode's closing minutes, when the drama's central secret threatened to unravel, that scene spiked to 9.4%, a signal that the show's tension landed where it was designed to.

The series follows Yoo Bo-na, played by Gong, a working mother who has just returned from three years of parental leave to her sales manager post at a company called Durumi Electronics. On the surface she is exactly what she appears to be: a warm, slightly harried mom who packs her daughter's mornings before heading to the office. The first episode made it clear, quickly, that she is also the legendary assassin known as "Kingfisher," the kind of detail the show treats not as a twist but as the premise it intends to complicate.

The opener established Bo-na's double life through contrast rather than exposition. A scene of her catching a falling cup without looking was followed shortly by a rooftop sequence in which she assembled a sniper rifle with practiced efficiency and reported for duty with the dry line "Client meeting starting now." The drama's tone sits somewhere between action thriller and dark workplace comedy, and the premiere leaned into both registers without fully committing to either, which may be exactly the point.

The episode also introduced a parallel pressure through Bo-na's husband, Kwon Tae-sung (played by Jeong Jun-won), an investigative journalist tracking a new drug network. A car explosion that was supposed to involve a low-level courier turns out to be connected to a far more significant figure in the organization, pulling Tae-sung deeper into a story he has no idea his wife is already tangled in. The show's dramatic irony rests almost entirely on that gap.

By the episode's end, the gap narrowed in a way that threatens Bo-na's carefully maintained separation of lives. She received an anonymous warning containing photographs of her family alongside images from one of her sniper operations, someone knows who she is. At the same moment, news coverage of "Kingfisher's" apparent return reached Tae-sung, visibly shaken by it. The two story threads are on a collision course, and the premiere used those final minutes to make that collision feel genuinely imminent.

A subplot revealed that Bo-na's team manager, Kim Bong-pal (played by Sung Dong-il), may also be connected to the events unfolding around her, adding another layer to a cast that is already working with more information than any single character knows they have. The episode also began threading in fragments of Bo-na's past, orphanage memories, the circumstances of her first meeting with Tae-sung, without fully surfacing them yet.

Married Woman Killer is adapted from a popular webtoon of the same name. For MBC, the adaptation carries some weight beyond its ratings: the network has leaned heavily on webtoon-sourced material in recent years as a way to bring in pre-existing audiences, and a 7.4% opener for a non-prime-time slot suggests the strategy continues to work. For Gong Hyo-jin, whose last MBC drama The Greatest Love peaked at 21% in 2011, the return is a reminder that she remains one of the more reliable draws on Korean television, and that parental leave, at least in this particular drama, is just a cover story.
