Gong Hyo-jin's 'Married Woman Killer' Gets a Lucky Break: No Competition on Its Premiere Night

Gong Hyo-jin opens her new MBC drama Married Woman Killer with a sniper rifle, a church rooftop, and zero competition: the show premieres on the 31st at 9:50 p.m. KST as the only weekend miniseries airing that night.

The scheduling gap comes courtesy of SBS. Chief Kim, the So Ji-sub-led thriller that wrapped last week after pulling in syndrome-level ratings, is being followed by Chaebol x Detective 2, but that sequel is taking a one-week break before its own premiere. That leaves Friday entirely to Married Woman Killer for at least one round.

The connection between Gong Hyo-jin and her predecessor in the slot is more than coincidental. She and So Ji-sub were romantic leads together in the 2013 drama Master's Sun, and now she is, in a sense, picking up the baton he left behind. Whether that warm-hand-off translates into audience carry-over is the first number worth watching after tonight's broadcast.

To build anticipation ahead of the premiere, the production released a set of stills showing the show's two central characters at work. Yu Bo-na (Gong Hyo-jin), three years removed from her last job, climbs to a cathedral rooftop for what her colleagues at Doruomi Electronics' Sales Team 3 are calling a "client meeting." Her real assignment: eliminate a violent criminal holed up in a hotel across the street. She assembles her Kingfisher-signature sniper rifle with the calm efficiency of someone who never really stopped.

Meanwhile, her husband Kwon Tae-seong (Jung Jun-won) is chasing a new synthetic drug case. Undercover at a nightclub, he dances and surveys the room simultaneously, then pushes his questions further at the local police station, eventually pulling an overnight stay in the name of the story. His dedication to the job is what strains his marriage: a husband who seems careless at home but refuses to back down in the field.

The premiere episode also revisits a past mission. On Christmas Day, career criminal Oh Man-seok (Kim Won-hae) walks out of prison and immediately turns on his own daughter, grabbing her by the throat the moment they reunite. Why he became a Kingfisher target, and what choice Yu Bo-na made that day, is framed as the tension engine for the first episode.

Married Woman Killer adapts a popular Kakao webtoon of the same name. The premise tracks Yu Bo-na's attempts to balance an ordinary working-mom life with a secret career that is anything but. With MBC, a recognizable lead, and a clear time slot, the early returns tonight will tell us quickly whether the premise has genuine crossover pull beyond its webtoon fanbase.
