Gong Hyo-jin Returns to MBC After 15 Years in Webtoon Thriller 'Married Woman Killer'

Gong Hyo-jin is returning to MBC on the 31st after a 15-year absence, leading the network's new Friday-Saturday drama Married Woman Killer as a suburban mother whose day job is considerably more dangerous than it appears. The role continues a pattern that has made her one of Korean television's most reliable stars: grounded domestic settings where the emotional register abruptly shifts into something darker or more urgent.

The series is adapted from a webtoon of the same name that has logged 170 million cumulative views, a figure that gave the production a head start in audience awareness well before casting was announced. That source material's popularity also set a clear expectation: the premise has already been tested on readers, and the drama's job is to translate it to screen.

Gong plays Yoo Bo-na, known in professional circles by the call sign Kingfisher. By day she is a working mother managing family life with her husband and daughter; in practice she is a precision operative whose unit eliminates violent criminals. Her last MBC appearance was in Best Love in 2011. In the years since she built a track record of dramas crossing the 20% national ratings threshold, including When the Camellia Blooms, Master's Sun, and Pasta, which gives MBC reasonable grounds for confidence in the casting.

In interviews ahead of the premiere, Gong described the character as genuinely difficult to reduce to a single identity. "It's hard to define which version of Bo-na is the real one," she said, "but that's exactly where the drama's appeal lives." She also flagged the show's non-linear structure as something that should reward patient viewers, noting that the narrative frequently moves backward through time before the significance of earlier scenes becomes clear.

Her co-star Jung Jun-won plays Kwon Tae-sung, Bo-na's husband and a journalist whose instinct for digging into stories begins to create friction at home. In a production note, Jung pointed to the action sequences as the element he found most intriguing, adding that his character has no direct visibility into his wife's real work, which shapes much of his dramatic function in the story.

The supporting unit assembled around Gong is substantial. Sung Dong-il plays Kim Bong-pal, the team leader who specializes in staging accidents; Kim Nam-hee plays weapons specialist Bong Tae-min; and Heo Jae-ho and Moon Jin-seong round out the crew as a medical operative and a hacker respectively. Kim Ga-hee appears as Yang Ye-sol, and Ha Yul-li plays Oh Hyun-nam, a new recruit who completes the ensemble.

A teaser released on the 23rd establishes the show's tonal balance early. It opens on Bo-na's apparent return to office life after a long leave, with her mother-in-law casually telling a curious neighbor that she works at a fan manufacturing company. The mundane cover story gives way quickly to a briefing room where the unit's actual mandate is laid out in flat, precise language: Sales Team 3 identifies and eliminates violent criminals. The teaser then cuts to the same team losing badly at a company workshop game and getting pushed around in a crowded elevator, a comedic undercutting of their professional competence that the show appears to deploy deliberately. When an operation begins in earnest, the shift is immediate.

In Korean television's current landscape, the assassin-with-a-domestic-life premise is not new, but the webtoon's proven reach and Gong's specific history with audiences who trust her to carry tonal complexity give Married Woman Killer a stronger foundation than most high-concept thrillers arrive with. Whether the non-linear structure and the tonal swings hold together across a full run is the question the May 31 premiere will begin to answer.
