From Three Drug Convictions to Paris: Han Seo-hee's Quiet Return to Social Media

Han Seo-hee, who completed her most recent prison sentence in November 2023, has been sharing travel photos from Paris and other European cities on social media, marking her most visible public activity since her release. The posts arrive less than two years after she finished serving time for a third drug conviction, a pattern that has kept her name circulating in Korean entertainment media long after her brief period as an idol trainee.

On consecutive days last week, she uploaded multiple photos without extended captions, the images showing her eating ice cream on a street and viewing paintings at a gallery. One post included a phrase referencing a Japanese schoolteacher aesthetic, which the Korean press noted as conspicuously at odds with the straightforward, casually styled photos themselves: a white T-shirt, wavy hair, sunglasses pushed up on her forehead, multiple earrings. A second set of photos showed her in a navy short-sleeve top with a shoulder bag and a watch, the kind of put-together-but-relaxed look that has its own label in Korean style culture (kkuankku, roughly meaning "effortlessly styled").

When comments on one post were slow to come in, she left a reply herself: "There are no comments so I'm upset, so I'll write one myself. You're cute, Seo-hee. Don't just live doing whatever you want." The self-deprecating sign-off caught more attention than the photos.

Han first became known through MBC's Star Audition: The Great Birth Season 3, a televised idol competition. Her public profile changed sharply in 2016, when she was convicted alongside BIGBANG's T.O.P on charges of marijuana use and LSD consumption, receiving a three-year suspended sentence with a four-year probation period.

That suspended sentence did not hold. In 2021, during her probation, she was convicted again on methamphetamine charges and sentenced to one year and six months in prison, which she served. A third conviction followed in 2022, adding another six months. She was released in November 2023.

Beyond her own convictions, Han was a significant figure in a broader industry reckoning. In 2019, she reported to police that B.I, then a member of iKON under YG Entertainment, had purchased and used drugs. During that investigation, she publicly alleged that Yang Hyun-suk, the former YG founder and chief producer, had attempted to pressure and intimidate her into withdrawing her account. B.I was ultimately convicted in 2021 and received a three-year suspended sentence. Yang Hyun-suk was separately tried on charges of retaliatory intimidation under aggravated punishment laws and received a six-month sentence, also suspended, with one year of probation.

Han's re-emergence on social media, with its deliberately low-key travel content, sits inside a complicated set of circumstances: an industry she was once part of, legal consequences that stretched across nearly a decade, and a public record that any caption she writes will inevitably be read against.
