'Hangout with Yoo' Hits 6% Peak Rating as Kim Won-hee and Gong Hyo-jin Audition for Short-Form Drama Sequel

MBC's Hangout with Yoo recorded a peak minute rating of 6.0% during its July 1 broadcast, driven by back-to-back mock casting interviews with actresses Gong Hyo-jin and Kim Won-hee for the second season of the show's in-house short-form drama Jjigyeo-yu. The episode came in first among all Saturday variety programs and all same-timeslot broadcasts, with a metropolitan household rating of 4.1% and a 20-54 demographic rating of 2.5%.

The premise is a recurring format on Hangout with Yoo, where host Yoo Jae-suk takes on the persona of a director and builds productions from scratch inside the show itself. The first season of Jjigyeo-yu was produced through the same process, and the search for a lead actress for season two became this week's central segment, with Yoo joined by regular cast members Haha, Heo Kyung-hwan, and Joo Woo-jae.

Gong Hyo-jin, the first candidate to appear, arrived with a clear preference. She said she had wanted to play a wealthy character, signaling genuine interest in the project. That enthusiasm, however, did not prevent her from offering a candid critique of the first season's script, which she described as losing momentum toward the end. Yoo Jae-suk's visible discomfort at hearing his own production assessed in real time was part of what made the segment land. Gong also recommended actor Jeong Jun-won, her co-star from the drama Married Woman Killer, as a candidate for the male lead role. When the production team learned that Jeong has an endorsement history with a foreign automobile brand, the prospect of a major product placement deal added another layer of interest to the suggestion.

Kim Won-hee, the second candidate, brought a different energy. A close friend of Yoo Jae-suk's for 22 years, the two have the kind of rapport that plays well on variety television precisely because it allows for arguments neither side takes too seriously. Kim spoke about her recent acting hiatus and said she wanted to try playing a villain. When Yoo proposed that she invest in the production budget herself, and Joo Woo-jae followed by suggesting she work without a fee, Kim responded with a visibly unamused expression, said she would need to consult with her manager, and left the room. The exchange produced the episode's peak rating moment.

For context, Hangout with Yoo occupies an unusual position in Korean variety television. Unlike most shows that commission external productions, it regularly builds its own content properties, music projects, drama series, short-form productions, from within the format, which means casting decisions and creative disagreements between Yoo and his guests happen on camera and become the episode itself. The Jjigyeo-yu sequel search fits that model directly.

Next week's episode will shift to a summer gathering for the show's recurring "Comma Club" segment. Hangout with Yoo airs every Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on MBC.
