IU's Defamation Problem Just Got Weirder: A Viral Post Is Now Dragging In a 2020 Missing Person Case
A social media account claiming to have been sued by IU for defamation has gone a step further, spreading a conspiracy theory linking the singer-actress to a person who went missing in Jeju in 2020. The post racked up thousands of likes before being widely debunked, and IU already has 96 people facing civil and criminal charges for similar attacks.

A conspiracy theory targeting IU crossed into genuinely disturbing territory on the 25th. An account using the name "Jaemincheong" (자유민주주의청년들, or "Free Democratic Youth") posted to social media claiming it had been sued by IU for defamation, then used that claim as a springboard for something worse: a thread connecting IU to a person named Heo who went missing in Jeju in December 2020.
The post stitched together four unrelated things, the location of Kakao's headquarters, the missing person case, a purple tracksuit IU wore on the 2017 JTBC variety show Hyori's Bed and Breakfast, and her 2024 song "Shh...", and declared that Heo had been "someone exposing IU online." It collected thousands of likes before the backlash hit.

Why none of it holds up
Starting with the music video claim: the actor Tang Wei appears in the "Shh..." music video, and the post implied she was portraying Heo. Tang Wei's agency pushed back directly, with the actor explaining that IU "plays both my mother and my friend, a very interesting relationship." IU herself said the song was about her mother: "The person I was addressing in my verse was my mother. I wanted to start with her story." There is no basis for the claim that Tang Wei was playing anyone connected to Heo.
The matching-clothes argument is even weaker. IU wore the purple Nerdy tracksuit on Hyori's Bed and Breakfast, which aired in 2017, three years before Heo went missing in December 2020. The purple clothing in the viral post came from an old identification photo of Heo, not from anything she was wearing at the time of her disappearance. No one has established that the two outfits are even the same product.
The account also complained about being caught under South Korea's Network Act amendments and framed the legislation as a "communist law" pushed by the opposition party. That's a separate grievance, but it explains the motivation: the poster appears to have been hit by online platform restrictions and is now cycling through every available IU-adjacent claim to build a persecution narrative.
IU's ongoing legal response
None of this is new terrain for IU's legal team. Back in February, her agency announced civil and criminal proceedings against 96 people for malicious posts. The results so far have been concrete: one person who spread a "spy" rumor about IU was fined 5 million won; another, who filed a false plagiarism complaint and reported IU for copyright infringement, was ordered to pay 30 million won in damages after the case resolved.
International posters are not getting a pass either. The agency has filed civil damages suits against users who spread false information about IU on Threads, and has begun the process of petitioning U.S. courts to compel disclosure of those users' identities.
The conspiracy theory about the Jeju missing person is false. The timeline is wrong, the evidence is nonexistent, and the people making the claims are, increasingly, in litigation.
