Jang Kiha's Song, a Male Co-Star, and IU: Fans Are Doing the Math Right Now

IU's recent week has given fans two things to talk about at once, and they're not letting either one go quietly.

On the 8th, theater actor Ahn Seungkyun posted a photo on his personal social media tagging IU's account, captioned "always my rock." The image shows IU visiting the Seoul venue where Ahn is currently performing in the play The Comeuppance, dressed low-key in a cap and mask. The two are posed close, warm enough that the photo made rounds fast.

Ahn and IU go back to 2018, when they shared the screen in tvN's My Mister. They've stayed close since. IU making time mid-schedule to show up and support a friend is on-brand for her, but the timing here is doing extra work.

That's because just two days earlier, on the 6th, IU had posted a personal photo update with Jang Kiha and the Faces' "Byuril Eopsi Sanda" ("Living Without Incident") playing as the background track. Jang Kiha is her ex. They dated publicly from 2013 for roughly four years before splitting. Using his song, from his band, in a casual personal post is the kind of move that fans clock immediately.

The reaction has been split. Some took it as a nostalgic, incidental music choice. Others found it a little pointed, given that Jang Kiha is currently in a relationship with actor Yoon Ga-i, who is 18 years his junior. A segment of the response online has been blunt: the song selection showed a lack of consideration. IU hasn't said why she picked it, and her agency hasn't addressed it, which leaves the interpretation wide open.

The Ahn Seungkyun photo, arriving right in the middle of that conversation, has added another layer. Whether IU intended any of this to read a certain way is genuinely unclear. But the sequence of events is messy enough that fans aren't moving on anytime soon.
