JYP Drops Xdinary Heroes Leader Gunil Within 24 Hours, Cancels Summer Sonic Over Fan Disparagement Leak

JYP Entertainment terminated Xdinary Heroes leader Gunil's exclusive contract on the 13th, just one day after audio allegedly capturing him insulting fans began circulating online. The swift action cost the group their Summer Sonic 2026 slot and an upcoming fan meeting, and it's being read as a direct expression of Park Jin-young's long-standing 'good person over talent' standard.

JYP Entertainment didn't hesitate. One day after audio allegedly featuring Xdinary Heroes leader Gunil using abusive language about fans began spreading across online communities, the label announced on the 13th that Gunil was out, contract terminated, group activities over.

The speed is the story. Gunil is a Berklee-trained drummer and the group's leader, not a replaceable role. And yet JYP moved fast enough to cancel Summer Sonic 2026, one of Japan's biggest music festivals, along with a fan meeting scheduled for September at Korea University's Hwajung Gymnasium. Eating those bookings to cut a member in under 24 hours is not a routine label decision.

What the leak actually said

The controversy started on the 12th, when someone claiming to be Gunil's ex-girlfriend posted an exposé online, including audio recordings. The recordings allegedly contained Gunil directing profanity at fans, the kind of content that, in the idol industry, doesn't have a good explanation regardless of context.

The combination of factors made this almost impossible to manage: a private relationship going public, a character controversy over the language used, and specific allegations of contempt toward fans, the exact people keeping the group's career alive. Gunil later acknowledged on a fan communication platform that the voice in the recordings was his, apologized, and claimed the remarks were directed at sasaeng fans and malicious commenters rather than the general fanbase.

That clarification came after JYP had already made its call.

Park Jin-young's standard, applied

The decision lands differently when you look at what JYP's founder has been saying for years. Park Jin-young has stated his 'character over talent' position publicly and repeatedly across multiple survival programs.

On Mnet's Sixteen in 2015, the show that assembled TWICE, he was direct: "I want them to be good people before they are good singers." He listed sincerity, humility, and honesty as his three non-negotiables, mentioned he had stopped using profanity himself since 2010, and told contestants they should "become the kind of person you don't need to be careful around." He also made the point that humility isn't required to succeed, but that when a crisis comes, you need the people around you, and whether they show up depends on how you treated them.

At the 2019 press conference for Mnet's Super Intern, he said he would rather have someone with ordinary skills who shows consideration for others and builds teamwork than someone exceptionally talented who doesn't. He applied that standard equally to artists, actors, and staff.

With that track record of public statements, Gunil's termination reads less like a reactive PR move and more like JYP running its own stated policy. The label didn't explain its reasoning in detail, it only said it recognized "the gravity of the situation", but the outcome matches the philosophy closely enough that the connection is hard to miss.

What's left for Xdinary Heroes

Xdinary Heroes now operate as a five-member group, and the scheduling damage is already done. Summer Sonic and the September fan meeting are off the calendar. Filling Gunil's role as drummer and leader on short notice isn't realistic, which makes the willingness to cancel major appearances rather than delay the decision all the more pointed.

JYP chose the controversy's gravity over the group's immediate activity plans. Whether the remaining members can rebuild momentum from here is a separate question, but the label's answer to the character question was fast and unambiguous.
