Kim Heechul Left 'Knowing Bros' After 11 Years: Kang Ho-dong's Philosophy Was the Final Push

Super Junior's Kim Heechul spent 11 years on Knowing Bros, and leaving wasn't a clean break. In a recent appearance on YouTube channel Swings' Egen Nam, he laid out exactly why he walked.

The immediate trigger was scheduling. Knowing Bros records every Thursday, and Super Junior's 20th anniversary world tour last year ran predominantly on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. That sounds manageable until you do the math: Heechul was either skipping Thursday recordings entirely or forcing the production to run a second recording session just to accommodate him. That's not a situation any cast member can sustain without guilt.

But the deeper reason involves Kang Ho-dong, and it's more interesting than a simple schedule conflict. Heechul described how working alongside Ho-dong fundamentally shifted his whole attitude toward broadcasting. Ho-dong's operating principle, according to Heechul, is unyielding: the viewer comes first, always, regardless of what's happening to the person on camera. "Whether I'm tired, whether my leg is broken, whether I have a cold," Heechul recalled Ho-dong saying, "what matters is the trust of the viewer."

The quote that stuck with him is specific. During late-night recording sessions when the whole crew is dragging at 4AM, Ho-dong would cut through the fatigue with one line: "We're at 4AM, but the viewers are watching at 6PM." Heechul said hearing that reframed everything. Once you absorb that standard, showing up half-committed because your concert ran long the night before feels like a betrayal of something Ho-dong built.

Heechul was also candid about money, which doesn't come up often in these conversations. When asked about his earnings during the early Super Junior era, he didn't dress it up: TV appearances back then were essentially a loss, revenue split across 13 members. He said the group earned more than nothing, just enough to stay afloat, but solo work on Knowing Bros paid considerably better than anything from the Super Junior years. He said it plainly.

The exit, then, reads less like a falling out and more like someone who took Ho-dong's lesson seriously enough to act on it. If you can't give the show full commitment, you shouldn't be there.
