Kwak Dong-yeon to Enlist in the Army on August 25, Days After Netflix Debut

Actor Kwak Dong-yeon will enlist in the South Korean Army as an active-duty soldier on August 25, his agency The Black Label confirmed on July 21. The timing puts his departure just days after his special appearance in the Netflix series The Crown Prince (동궁), which dropped on July 17 and quickly pulled in international viewers.

Kwak, 29, will enter the Army Training Center quietly, with no public send-off event planned. After completing basic military training, he will be assigned to a unit and serve out the remainder of his mandatory service period.

The Black Label said in a statement that Kwak "plans to faithfully fulfill his duty of national defense."

His enlistment does create one visible gap in his variety schedule. Kwak had been a cast member on the tvN entertainment show Bogeom Magical Season 2, alongside Park Bo-gum and Lee Sang-yi. With his departure, actor Ko Kyung-pyo has joined the show as a new member to fill the spot.

Kwak made his acting debut in 2012 on the KBS 2TV drama You've Fallen for Me (넝쿨째 굴러온 당신) and has built a steady filmography over the past decade. He appeared in Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, Vincenzo, and Queen of Tears, the latter of which became one of the most-watched Korean dramas of 2024 on Netflix. He also featured in the military comedy film 6/45.

His cameo in The Crown Prince, where he plays the crown prince, landed at a useful moment: global audiences who encountered him there for the first time now have an immediate reason to explore his back catalog. Whether that translates into measurable subscriber or search growth during his service will be worth watching. The streaming window he is leaving on is, at minimum, a better one than most actors get on enlistment day.
