Fresh Start, Messy Past: Lee Mu-jin Joins Mound Media's New 'Question Mark' Label After 2.1B Won Dispute

Singer-songwriter Lee Mu-jin is starting over at a brand-new label called Question Mark, a subsidiary of Mound Media, launched on August 31. The move comes after a court granted his injunction against former agency Big Planet Made Entertainment over roughly 2.1 billion won in alleged unpaid settlements, though the underlying lawsuit just got more complicated.

Lee Mu-jin has a new label, and it is named Question Mark. That is either very on-brand or very on-the-nose, given how much is still unresolved.

Mound Media officially launched the new label on the 31st, unveiling its social media accounts, official logo, and symbol all at once. The name Question Mark is intentional: the label says it wants music to function as a question, with the listening experience extending into reflection and lingering thought. Lee Mu-jin signed on as the label's first artist.

How he got here

Lee Mu-jin had been with Big Planet Made Entertainment since 2022. In June, he sued the agency, claiming roughly 2.1 billion won in unpaid settlements and filing for a contract suspension injunction on the 16th of that month. The court granted the injunction on the 24th, effectively freeing him to make moves.

That should have been clean. It wasn't. On the 27th, the Seoul Central District Court's Civil Division 28 reversed a default judgment that had been entered in Lee Mu-jin's favor. Big Planet Made and chairman Cha Ga-won had failed to respond within 30 days of receiving the complaint, triggering a no-argument ruling under Korean civil procedure. But on the 27th, the agency finally submitted an answer to the court, which canceled the default judgment and sent the case back into full litigation. The contract dispute is now headed for a proper trial.

Who Mound Media is

Mound Media positions itself as a kind of indie-sector major, its own description is "the HYBE of the indie scene." The company already runs several labels: Rhombus, home to singer-songwriter Lee Seung-yoon; Authentic, which includes "Gen Z rock star" Han Roro; and Tapes, which counts Gureum, Kim Seung-ju, and Ghost Bookstore among its artists. Question Mark is the newest addition.

Lee Mu-jin is a solid fit for that ecosystem. He placed third on JTBC's Singer Gain in 2020 and built a streaming reputation on the strength of hits like "Traffic Light" and "Episode." He has also branched into variety, hosting the web show Limousine Service, racked up multiple drama OST credits, and is currently appearing on MBC Every1's Great Guide 3.

The label says the two will work toward music with both joy and depth. Whether the legal chapter with Big Planet Made closes cleanly enough to let that happen without distraction remains, fittingly, a question.
