Jeon Hyun-moo's Unplanned Trip to Kazakhstan May Have Had Official Tourism Backing
The production team behind MBC's Na Honjasanda has denied staging Jeon Hyun-moo's impromptu Kazakhstan episode, insisting the trip unfolded exactly as broadcast. The denial sits alongside an official post from Almaty city stating the filming was organized with support from its tourism bureau, a claim the production has not directly addressed.

The production team behind MBC's variety show Na Honjasanda (I Live Alone) released an official statement on the 25th denying that host Jeon Hyun-moo's Kazakhstan episode was staged, but the denial has done little to quiet the controversy. Days earlier, the city of Almaty published a post on Kazakhstan's government website describing the shoot as having been "organized with support from the Almaty City Tourism Bureau," a characterization that sits in direct tension with the show's central premise of unplanned, spontaneous travel.

The episode in question aired on the 14th. In it, Jeon arrived at Incheon International Airport without a destination in mind, stood before the departures board asking aloud where to go, and ultimately chose Almaty based on departure times. He booked a flight on the spot, then arranged accommodation and a rental car at the airport before flying out. The segment, which continued in a second installment on the 21st, showed him driving roughly 290 kilometers through the night to reach Kolsai Lake. The show's framing throughout was of genuine, unscripted impulse.

What the production said
In its statement, the production team said Jeon submitted an international driver's license and passport to the local rental company directly at the airport before departure, and that this was exactly what the rental company had asked for. The team acknowledged, however, that only after broadcast did it check with the Korean Embassy in Kazakhstan and learn that a separately notarized Russian-language translation of a Korean driver's license is actually required to drive legally in the country. In other words, the rental was completed in a way the embassy says was not compliant with local traffic law.

The production framed this as a good-faith error: they followed the rental company's instructions and were unaware of the additional notarization requirement. The embassy told the team it would issue a public advisory, noting that many Korean travelers had already run into the same problem.

South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a travel safety notice the same day, confirming the requirement: visitors driving in Kazakhstan must carry the original Korean license along with a Russian-language translation that has been notarized either by a notary office or a Korean diplomatic mission abroad.

The team also denied receiving any filming support or sponsorship related to the Kazakhstan trip.

The Almaty city statement
The more difficult claim to reconcile is what Almaty city itself said. On the 21st, the city's official page on Kazakhstan's government website introduced the Na Honjasanda episode and stated that "filming in Kazakhstan was organized with support from the Almaty City Tourism Bureau." The post went into specific detail: it listed the locations Jeon visited, including Kok-Tobe, the Green Bazaar, Arbat Street, and Kaindi Lake, and noted that the MBC YouTube clip related to the episode had surpassed 500,000 views. The city described Korea as a "high-potential tourism market" and said more than 23,000 Korean tourists had visited Almaty the previous year. Multiple Kazakh news outlets reported the same information.

The production's statement that no filming support or sponsorship was received does not directly address why Almaty's tourism bureau described itself as having organized the shoot. That gap is where the public skepticism is concentrated.
A recurring question in Korean variety
Viewer suspicion about the episode had been building since the 14th broadcast. The practical objections raised online were concrete: coordinating flights for a production crew of dozens cannot realistically happen at the airport in real time, and the rental car scene, in which Jeon drove away from Almaty airport within 40 minutes of landing, struck viewers familiar with Kazakhstan's licensing rules as implausible without preparation. One commenter, describing a personal trip to Almaty in May, wrote that they had needed to get their license notarized either at the local Korean consulate or through the Korean embassy in Kazakhstan beforehand, calling the show's version of events "renting a car like it's Jeju Island."
This kind of scrutiny is not new to Korean unscripted television. The genre's appeal depends heavily on the appearance of genuine spontaneity, and when that appearance cracks, audiences tend to read every earlier detail as constructed. Whether the Na Honjasanda team coordinated logistics in advance while preserving Jeon's on-camera choices as authentic, or whether the Almaty tourism bureau's description overstated its involvement, the production has not yet offered a full account that reconciles both sides of the record.
