YouTuber Park Wi loses 1 million subscriber status amid CCTV controversy
After releasing CCTV footage of a KTX accident, YouTuber Park Wi faces significant backlash and a sharp decline in subscribers. His actions raise ethical questions about his influence as a popular figure.

YouTuber Park Wi has found himself embroiled in controversy following the release of CCTV footage from a recent KTX wheelchair fall incident. The video, which was made public on August 21, depicted how his wheelchair became entangled with a staff member's foot, leading to a fall. The incident happened as Park was disembarking from the train on August 14, catching significant media attention and prompting questions about the appropriateness of his actions.

Critics have raised concerns that Park utilized his status as a 1 million subscriber YouTuber to gain expedited access to the footage, typically a difficult process for ordinary individuals. According to industry norms, obtaining such footage usually takes a minimum of 7 to 19 days, but it is suspected that Park acquired it much faster, possibly under a week. YouTube commentator Lee Jin-ho pointed out that while it is not uncommon for parties involved in incidents to request videos, the ease with which Park obtained the footage raises ethical questions. He suggested that the footage was provided through a formal information disclosure request rather than a casual viewing process.

As the controversy escalated, Park issued an apology via his YouTube channel after facing backlash for publicly sharing the video. In his message, he acknowledged that he had not considered the perspective of the staff member involved, who had apologized during the incident. He reflected, "I failed to think of the situation from the perspective of the staff member who was trying to assist me. My way of conveying the incident was immature and hasty. I apologize to everyone who helped on-site." Despite his apologies, many viewers weren't satisfied, leading to a significant drop in subscribers that saw his count fall from over 1 million to around 99,800 by August 24.

Online discussions have pointed out that airing the footage could be damaging to the individuals featured, particularly when the intent behind the video appears to highlight their mistakes. One user commented on a community board that, while the incident did cause harm, publicizing it might further traumatize those involved, as well as unfairly amplify discrimination against disabled individuals.

As public criticism mounted, several upcoming events featuring Park were canceled, including a scheduled lecture in Seoul and a talk concert aimed at raising awareness for barrier-free accessibility. Doubts regarding how Park obtained the footage continued to circulate, with many questioning the ethical implications of utilizing his platform for personal gain rather than for constructive dialogue about safety and accessibility issues.

As of August 25, Park's subscriber count has dropped to approximately 983,000, reflecting ongoing public sentiment against his recent actions. Over 27,700 comments have accumulated on his apology video, showing the depth of the backlash and the concerns expressed by the community. Amidst this turmoil, Park's future as a content creator and influencer remains uncertain as he navigates the fallout from this incident.
