NewJeans Is Coming Back, But Will Minji Be There?
Three NewJeans members, Hani, Haerin, and Hyein, have been spotted in Copenhagen as part of a confirmed pre-production process, with agency ADOR signaling a comeback is underway. But the group's oldest member, Minji, has yet to officially commit, and the question of whether NewJeans returns as a trio or a quartet may define how this revival is received.

Three members of NewJeans are already in motion. Hani, Haerin, and Hyein were recently spotted in Copenhagen, Denmark, and agency ADOR confirmed the trip was "part of a pre-production process to build NewJeans' new musical narrative", the clearest signal yet that a comeback is coming after two years of near-silence.

But the group's oldest member, Minji, hasn't said a word about what she plans to do next. And for fans watching every update closely, that silence has become the story.
Where things stand
The backdrop here matters. NewJeans spent much of the past two years in a deeply public dispute with ADOR, a legal and personal standoff that included a dramatic November 2024 press conference and a series of court rulings that ultimately upheld the validity of the members' exclusive contracts. Haerin and Hyein returned to ADOR first, followed by Hani. Member Danielle, whose contract has since been terminated, remains in active litigation.
Minji's situation sits somewhere in between. She hasn't formally departed, but she hasn't made any public move toward rejoining her labelmates either. ADOR's statement about comeback preparations notably referred to "members" in general terms, without specifying who was included, and the group's situation as either a trio or a quartet is still an open question.
The cookie moment
Then came Minji's birthday on July 7th, and a detail that fans immediately zeroed in on.
NewJeans' official social media account posted a "Happy Minji Day" message featuring photos of Minji baking cookies, seemingly the cookies she later brought to a fan birthday café, where she reportedly made a surprise appearance and handed them out personally along with a handwritten letter. NewJeans' Weverse page also displayed a birthday banner for her.

The interesting part isn't the gesture itself, but the pipeline: for those photos to land on NewJeans' official accounts, either someone from ADOR photographed her or Minji sent the images to the label herself. Either way, there's communication happening. After months of opacity, that's not nothing.
Should we stop short of reading too much into it, that's probably the right instinct. But for a fandom that has been starved of signals, a birthday post coordinated with the label felt like a temperature check worth noting.
The harder question: is Minji's return actually good for NewJeans?
Minji was the face of NewJeans in a very specific way. As the group's oldest member, she carried an image closely associated with the group's original creative direction, and with former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin, who shaped that direction. The perception that she was the member most aligned with Min Hee-jin's vision made her central to how the group's identity was constructed.
That association also made the fallout more visible. At the November 2024 press conference, Minji's responses, including a now-memed moment where she asked reporters "Did you understand?" in response to legal claims that journalists were pressing her to substantiate, spread widely online. The clip became shorthand for criticism of how the members handled the public-facing phase of the dispute.
And her delayed return, while the other three members have already moved forward, has generated its own friction. The dominant reaction has been something like bewilderment: the court ruled, the others accepted it, so what exactly is Minji waiting for?
The counterargument, and it's a reasonable one, is that Minji returning is almost certainly better for everyone than the alternative. A four-member NewJeans is closer to its original form than a trio, which eases the burden on Hani, Haerin, and Hyein and gives ADOR a stronger foundation for the comeback it's clearly working toward. Each member also carries her own fanbase, and Minji's portion of the NewJeans fandom is significant, a reunion that includes her would consolidate that energy in a way that a three-member lineup simply can't.
From Minji's side, the math isn't simple either. If the relationship with ADOR breaks down entirely, she faces the same legal exposure that Danielle is currently navigating, a costly, prolonged process that would also freeze her activity as an artist in the meantime.
Timed well or not, a return would likely function as a win for Minji, for the other members, and for the group as a whole. The question now is whether she decides that the moment is right, and whether NewJeans fans will get the four-member comeback they've been holding out for.
