NewJeans Returns After 16 Months, But Danielle's Solo Post Tells a Different Story

NewJeans surprised fans on their 4th anniversary with a special film featuring all four active members, marking the group's first official content since suspending activities in early 2025. Former member Danielle, now in a separate legal dispute with ADOR, posted a selfie and a personal message the same day, separately.

NewJeans dropped a surprise anniversary film at midnight on July 22, their first official group content in roughly 16 months. The video, titled 2026 Summer of NewJeans, appeared on the group's YouTube channel with no advance notice and featured all four currently active members: Minji, Hani, Haerin, and Hyein.

The timing is notable. NewJeans halted all activities in March 2025 after courts sided with ADOR in both a provisional injunction and the main contract validity lawsuit, blocking the members' attempt to operate independently under the name NJZ. That legal fight started when the group declared their exclusive contracts void in November 2024, following the dismissal of former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin.

Since then, the group has come back in pieces. Haerin and Hyein returned to ADOR last November. Hani followed in December. Minji's situation has been described by ADOR as moving in a positive direction, though no formal announcement has been made. She appears in the anniversary film, which the industry is reading as a soft signal that her return is close to settled.

Danielle is the outlier. ADOR terminated her contract in December, citing her role in the group's attempted departure, and the two sides are now in active litigation over that decision. She was not part of the anniversary content.

She did, however, mark the day. Danielle posted a selfie on her personal social media account with a message written in English: she wrote that life sometimes gets blurry but light always finds its way back, and encouraged fans to keep shining until then. The post was warm and careful, the kind of thing you write when you want to say something without saying too much.

The contrast between Minji and Danielle is the story. The two had been the most publicly aligned members throughout the legal battle, appearing together in court as representatives of the group during mediation proceedings in August last year. Four months later, Minji is in the group's anniversary video and Danielle is posting selfies alone.

ADOR framed the anniversary film as content made "to celebrate with fans," adding that the members' hearts had come together for it. The agency said Bunnies, the fandom name, should enjoy it warmly. On what comes next, ADOR was deliberately vague: specific activity plans and formats will be announced only after all member discussions are fully concluded.

More content is reportedly on the way. ADOR confirmed follow-up releases after the special film, though no schedule was given.

NewJeans debuted on July 22, 2022, with the music video for "Attention" and spent the next two years producing one of K-pop's more remarkable commercial runs. Their second mini-album Get Up reached number one on the Billboard 200 in August 2023, making them only the second K-pop girl group to achieve that. Their last new release was the Japanese single "Supernatural" in June 2024. Sixteen months is a long time to go quiet, and a surprise midnight drop on the anniversary is the kind of move that suggests someone at ADOR has a plan. What that plan looks like without Danielle in it remains the open question.
