A 2024 Saju Reading Called Park Wi's Marriage Difficult. Now It's Going Viral Again.

YouTuber Park Wi and his wife Song Ji-eun, a former member of K-pop group Secret, were removed from their roles as Seoul city promotional ambassadors on August 28, following backlash over a CCTV video Park Wi posted on his YouTube channel. The controversy has also revived public interest in a 2024 saju (traditional Korean fortune-telling) reading that assessed the couple's compatibility in notably cautious terms.

YouTuber Park Wi and singer-actress Song Ji-eun, a former member of K-pop group Secret, were dropped from Seoul City's official list of promotional ambassadors on August 28, following sustained public criticism over a CCTV video Park Wi posted to his channel. The removal reflects how quickly the fallout from the controversy moved beyond online comment sections and into official civic relations.

The incident that started it

On the 14th, Park Wi was involved in an accident while disembarking from a KTX train: the wheels of his wheelchair caught on the foot of a social service worker who was supporting a portable ramp, causing him to fall. Later, on the 21st, Park Wi uploaded CCTV footage of the incident to his YouTube channel Wiraclass, framing the post as an effort to highlight mobility rights and prevent similar incidents.

The response was sharply critical. The social service worker had already apologized on-site, and many viewers felt that broadcasting specific footage of an individual employee's mistake through a channel with a large subscriber base went well beyond the stated goal of raising awareness. The criticism was pointed enough that Park Wi deleted the video and issued a formal apology. "I failed to consider the position of the worker who did their best to help me at the scene and apologized respectfully," he wrote. "My delivery was immature and my thinking was short. I apologize to everyone who made an effort there."

The apology did not fully contain the situation. Negative comments extended to Song Ji-eun's personal accounts, and the couple has since disabled comments on their social media.

Ambassador roles quietly removed

Park Wi had already indicated on the 27th that he intended to step down from his Seoul city ambassador role voluntarily. By the 28th, both his and Song Ji-eun's photos had been removed from the Seoul Metropolitan Government's official ambassadors page. The city did not make a formal public statement accompanying the change.

Park Wi and Song Ji-eun filed their marriage registration in September 2024 and held a private ceremony in Seoul the following month.

A 2024 saju reading resurfaces

Running alongside the ambassador story online is the renewed circulation of a December 2024 YouTube video from the channel Oseong-gung Bakyeon, in which a fortune teller assessed the couple's saju, a traditional Korean practice of reading a person's fate based on their birth date and time, without initially being told their identities.

In the reading, the fortune teller described Song Ji-eun's chart as that of a loyal, gentle person who "would need to endure a great deal." Park Wi's chart, she said, showed a tendency toward flashes of anger and a degree of self-centeredness. After being told who the subjects were, she added that she hoped they would build a harmonious life together, but that the compatibility required deep patience and resolve from Song Ji-eun's side.

Saju readings are a widely consumed form of entertainment and cultural practice in Korea, and their predictive claims carry no more evidentiary weight than any other form of fortune-telling. What the renewed attention reflects, more than anything, is the way public sentiment can pull older content back into view when a controversy opens up, a pattern that has become familiar in the age of large social media followings built around personal narrative.
