Park Wi and Song Ji-eun's Kenya Trip Sparks Controversy Over Misrepresented Intentions

YouTubers Park Wi and his wife, former SECRET member Song Ji-eun, are facing backlash as their past trip to Kenya is reexamined. Initially described as a volunteer mission, it's now been revealed that the visit was actually a vision trip organized by Compassion Korea, a Christian non-profit organization dedicated to child well-being.

On September 12, reports surfaced that the couple participated in this vision trip in August 2025, where participants are encouraged to observe local operations, including visiting offices and children's centers, but do not engage in volunteer work. Compassion Korea has explicitly stated on their official website that the vision trip is an experience meant to deepen participants’ understanding of their mission in the region, distinctly separate from volunteer tasks.

During their trip, Park Wi shared insights in a YouTube video titled "One Child Changed Our Lives" published in October 2025. However, this video has resurfaced amid ongoing controversies surrounding Park Wi’s recent accident after deteriorating conditions on his KTX train ride. It features scenes where local individuals assist him and his wife in navigating challenging roads and narrow alleys in Kenya, leading to criticism from the public. Many viewers perceived this as a contradiction, interpreting their presence there as receiving help rather than providing it, prompted reactions like "Did they go to volunteer or to receive assistance?"

Previously, Park Wi and Song Ji-eun had presented information about their trip on social media. Song Ji-eun noted their travels with Compassion, highlighting it as a significant personal experience. However, following the recent media attention, viewers are reexamining the implications of their previous narratives as the couple becomes embroiled in discussions about authenticity in social media and the ethics of charity involvement.

The controversy intensified for Park Wi in August 2025 when he shared CCTV footage from a KTX mishap, where he fell while exiting. Critics erupted at him for revealing the footage of a social service worker who was providing assistance during the incident, arguing it was an excessive response considering the worker’s effort in helping him.

Despite the backlash, the couple's YouTube channel, 'Wira-Kul', saw a decline in subscribers, dropping from over a million to approximately 949,000 just prior to September 12. The situation reflects growing scrutiny over social media portrayals of volunteerism and the ethical boundaries between service and self-promotion.

In light of the debate, Park Wi acknowledged the misinterpretation of their trip's intention and emphasized the need to respect the hard work of those who assisted them.
