The reunion comes ahead of their 12th debut anniversary, marking this significant occasion after the members focused on solo projects since their last album, Cosmic, released in June 2024. The new mini-album features five tracks, including the title song Surfin' Boy, which explores a refreshing and mature summer vibe, distinct from their previous energetic summer anthems like Red Flavor and Power Up.

The title track is a dance piece rooted in bossa nova rhythms, characterized by dreamy vocal harmonies layered over a cool soundscape. Written solely by Joy, the song captures cherished memories of past summers while imagining joyful moments yet to come. This lyrical approach evokes a sense of wistfulness, allowing listeners to contemplate sunsets on the beach rather than the heat of midday.

During a recent press release, the members expressed their excitement at reuniting. Irene shared her gratitude towards fans for their patience over the past two years. She stated, “The practice sessions we had together felt exceptionally good.” Seulgi noted their collective growth during their solo activities and hoped this maturity would shine through the album. Wendy echoed these sentiments, expressing a desire to reward fans with quality music and performances after waiting so long.

Joy, who participated in the songwriting process, remarked, “I wanted to convey the feeling that we could create even more beautiful memories together this time.” She shared her overwhelming joy when Seulgi praised her writing, recalling, “Hearing that meant the world to me.” Seulgi added her confidence in the song after listening to the demo, she felt that it perfectly suited Red Velvet’s unique style.

The album production process came with its own noteworthy stories. During the shooting of their teaser and music video in Jeju, unexpected rain forced the members to rush back to their accommodations while still adorned in mermaid accessories, leaving a memorable mark on the experience. Yeri expressed a special fondness for the track Hula Hoop, recommending it for road trips or travels to capture its refreshing mood.

Leading up to their comeback, Red Velvet achieved substantial success, holding a sold-out fan concert titled A Day in Red & Velvet at Korea University's Hwajeong Gymnasium from August 31 to September 2. This celebration was particularly special as they marked their debut anniversary with fans.

Yeri stated, “Thanks to our fans, we could stand on stage as a five-member group again.” Joy, Wendy, Seulgi, and Irene all resonated with the importance of fans’ patience, sharing a collective hope to make joyful memories on stage together once again.
