Yoo Jae-suk Wins a Star Award, Then Refuses to Give His Speech: Because He Wants a Bigger One

Yoo Jae-suk won the Popular Star Award at the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards on July 31, then immediately told the audience he wouldn't be giving his speech. Not yet, anyway.

Taking the microphone at Paradise City in Incheon, the veteran broadcaster flashed his signature wide grin and said, "I was genuinely surprised, I didn't think I'd be receiving a Popular Star Award." Then he pivoted to the gag the room didn't see coming: "I'm going to hold off on the full speech for now. Let's look forward to a bigger award a little later." The hall erupted. With the Grand Prize and Best Work categories still to be announced, the implication was unmistakable, and the crowd loved him for it.

The Blue Dragon Series Awards, now in its fifth year, recognizes excellence in Korean OTT and streaming content. This year's ceremony was hosted by broadcaster Jeon Hyun-moo and Girls' Generation's Yoona at the Incheon venue.

Yoo Jae-suk wasn't the only one walking away with a Popular Star Award. Actor Ko Yoon-jung, Byeon Woo-seok, and comedian Lee Su-ji shared the category, which is voted on by fans. Before the speeches, cameras caught each winner striking a pose as their name was called: Byeon Woo-seok drew hearts in the air and mimed shooting love arrows, while Yoo Jae-suk launched a finger heart toward the lens before the laughs had even started. Lee Su-ji followed with her own heart gesture.

The other winners were more straightforward in their remarks. Ko Yoon-jung, who also picked up the Global Icon Award for her drama Is This Love Also Translatable?, said she was grateful for the unexpected recognition and pledged to keep working hard. Byeon Woo-seok thanked fans for the effort, time, and love they had put into supporting him, saying he would try to become a performer worthy of the award. Lee Su-ji framed hers as a call to duty: "I think this award is given to remind me to keep delivering laughs, with a sense of responsibility."

Kim Seon-ho, seated in the audience during Ko Yoon-jung's speech, could be seen cheering her on visibly, adding a warm undercurrent to what was already a good-natured evening.

As for Yoo Jae-suk and that promised big-award speech: whether the Grand Prize ended up requiring one is a story for the night's final results. But the setup alone was enough to make him the most talked-about presence in the room, which, for a broadcaster who has held that position for the better part of two decades, feels right on schedule.
